WhatsApp MCP Documentation

WhatsApp MCP connects your AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any client that supports the Model Context Protocol) to the WhatsApp number you already use. Your assistant can read and search your chats, find who is waiting for a reply, and send, schedule, edit or react to messages, always from your own number and only when you ask.

It links to WhatsApp as a linked device, the same way WhatsApp Web does. There is no app to install, no new number and no Meta Business API.

Setup

You connect once, then link your WhatsApp in the chat.

Option A: Claude's connector directory

  1. In Claude, open the connector directory and find WhatsApp MCP.
  2. Click Connect. Our connection page opens: check that it names your AI app, then click Connect again.
  3. Back in Claude, open a new chat and type "Connect my WhatsApp" (see "Link your WhatsApp" below).

There's no sign-up or password: your WhatsApp number is your account, and linking it is how we know it's you.

Option B: a personal connection URL (any MCP client)

  1. Go to wa-mcp.com, choose your AI app and click Generate my link.
  2. Add the link to your AI app as a custom connector (MCP server). The site shows the exact steps for each app, and How to Connect Claude to WhatsApp walks through Claude step by step.
  3. Open a new chat and type "Connect my WhatsApp".

Keep the link private: it works like a password. You can use the same link in several AI apps.

Link your WhatsApp

When you ask your assistant to connect your WhatsApp, it offers two ways:

  • QR code: your assistant shows a QR code (and a link to a page with it). On your phone, open WhatsApp → Settings → Linked devices → Link a device and scan it.
  • Pairing code: give your assistant your phone number with its country code. It returns an 8-character code. On your phone, open Linked devices → Link a device → Link with phone number instead and type the code.

After linking, WhatsApp syncs your recent history (up to about 90 days) to the linked device, which can take a few minutes for large accounts.

Plans

  • Free trial: every feature for 1 hour after you first link a phone.
  • Free plan: after the trial, reading, summarizing and searching chats and sending text messages keep working. Text messages end with "Sent via wa-mcp.com", and new conversations (people who haven't written to you in the last 90 days) can't be started.
  • Paid plan: files (photos, videos, voice notes, documents), scheduled messages, editing, reacting to and deleting messages, new conversations with anti-ban guardrails, and no label.

Ask your assistant "What plan am I on?" to see your plan and subscription options.

Tools

Your assistant chooses the tools; you just ask in plain words.

Example prompts

  • "Who's waiting for a reply from me since yesterday?"
  • "Summarize what the family group talked about this week."
  • "Find the message where Carlos sent me the address."
  • "Tell Ana the order ships Thursday." (your assistant shows the draft first unless you gave the exact words)
  • "Every Monday at 9am, remind the team group to send their weekly update."

Safety

  • You stay in control of what's sent. When your assistant writes a message for you, it shows you the draft before sending unless you gave it the exact text.
  • Anti-ban guardrails. Messages to people who haven't written to you in the last 90 days are spaced out (at most 1 a minute and 10 different people every 12 hours), because that's what gets numbers flagged as spam. Chats with people who have written to you are never limited. There are no bulk-sending tools.
  • Typing indicator. A short "typing…" appears before each message, as it would if you typed it.

Troubleshooting

  • "WhatsApp is not linked": the linked device was removed (from your phone, or by unlinking). Ask your assistant to connect your WhatsApp again with the same number.
  • The pairing code doesn't work: codes expire after a short time. Ask for a new one, check the number includes the country code, and use Link with phone number instead on your phone.
  • Messages stopped arriving: ask your assistant to restart your WhatsApp connection. If WhatsApp on your phone has been offline for about 14 days, WhatsApp logs out linked devices: open WhatsApp on your phone, then link again.
  • "This connection is permanently registered to phone number…": each connection belongs to one phone. To use another number, unlink, then remove the connector and add it again (or, with a personal URL, generate a new one).
  • The connector says it isn't connected (directory users): remove WhatsApp MCP from your connectors and connect it again, then link the same phone. Your account and subscription carry over.

Privacy and your data

Your messages are stored for 90 days on our servers so your assistant can search them, and are never used for advertising or AI training. What your assistant reads is handled by its provider under their policy. Ask your assistant to unlink your WhatsApp or delete your account at any time; deleting removes everything immediately. The full details are in our Privacy Policy and Terms.
