We score six material factors from disclosed composition. A score is a tradeoff read, not a lab test of the finished garment.
Microplastics
Synthetic fabrics can shed plastic microfibers during wear and washing. We score the disclosed synthetic share; we do not measure a specific garment's shedding rate.
PFAS Chemicals
Some water- and stain-resistant finishes use PFAS. We apply a default penalty for materials commonly associated with those treatments. A fiber label does not prove a finish is present or absent.
Material Half-Life
How long materials take to decompose matters. Synthetics persist for centuries while natural fibers break down faster.
Production Energy
Manufacturing impact varies by material. Petroleum-based synthetics require more energy than organic or recycled alternatives.
Azo Dyes
Some azo dyes can release listed aromatic amines. A fiber label does not name the dye. We flag materials commonly associated with those dye processes, not a lab result for the finished item.
Fiber Shedding
Fabrics release fibers into the air and water. We assess shedding rates that affect indoor air quality and waterways.
