Membership guides

  • Common mistakes and questions about credit unions: People often assume they cannot join a credit union, skip the field-of-membership check, or confuse balance-sheet figures with rates and fees. Here is what to watch for.
  • Credit union rules in the United States: How the register describes US credit unions: federal and state charters, the field of membership, and the NCUA call report data behind each listing on this site.
  • How to choose a credit union: Check the field of membership first. If you cannot join, nothing else matters. Then compare charter type, assets and branch locations, and ask the credit union about fees and rates.
  • How to read a credit union listing: Every listing on this site shows the charter number, field of membership, total assets and member count from the NCUA quarterly call report. Here is what each field means.

Questions

Who is listed on CreditUnions?

Federally insured credit unions from the NCUA quarterly call report data, which is US Government public-domain data. A listing shows the register facts: charter number, field of membership, assets and members. It is not a recommendation.

How do I know if I can join a credit union?

Every credit union has a field of membership: the people it may serve. Community charters serve an area; employer and association charters serve a common bond; some let anyone join through a low-cost association. Use the eligibility checker or the who-can-join filter.

Are the rates and fees shown?

No. The call report has balance-sheet figures (assets, members, branches), not rate sheets. Rates and fees change often — confirm them with the credit union.

How do I report a mistake?

Write to hello@creditunions.fyi with the listing name, the city and what is wrong. An editor checks it against the register and corrects the listing.

Not financial advice. CreditUnions lists federally insured credit unions and the data they file with the NCUA. It is not financial advice and a listing is not a recommendation. Figures come from the most recent quarterly call report and were last checked on the date shown on each listing; they change, so confirm everything with the credit union before you join. To report a mistake, write to hello@creditunions.fyi.
