Use GridIron Data in ChatGPT, Claude and Cursor (MCP)
Connect GridIron Data to your AI assistant and ask for NFL fantasy data in plain English — "top RB projections for week 8 in half-PPR", "how did Justin Jefferson do in 2023", "any injury news on Malik Nabers". The assistant calls the API for you, on your own account and plan.
One URL: https://api.gridirondata.com/mcp
A hosted MCP server (Streamable HTTP). Add it to ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code or Cursor and sign in with your GridIron Data account — email and password, Google or GitHub. Nothing to install, no key to paste.
Connecting GridIron Data in Claude, then asking for week 8 receiver projections and a player-prop probability (1:06, with captions).
Before you start
- A GridIron Data account. No account? Sign up free, or create one on the sign-in screen when you connect. A free account answers player lookups and this week's projections; stats, snaps, news, matchups, the schedule and other weeks need Basic; prop probabilities, defense vs position and betting lines need Pro. See plans.
How sign-in works
1You add the URL in your assistant. 2It opens a GridIron Data page where you sign in and click Allow. 3You're sent back, connected.
The assistant gets a token that works only for this server, expires after an hour and renews itself. It never sees your password or your API key. Every call runs on your account, so your plan and monthly quota apply exactly as they do for the API. To disconnect, remove the connection in the assistant.
ChatGPT
On ChatGPT plans that allow custom MCP servers:
- Open Plugins (chatgpt.com/plugins), click + and choose Add custom MCP server.
- Name:
GridIron Data. URL:https://api.gridirondata.com/mcp. Authentication: OAuth (leave the client fields empty; ChatGPT registers itself). - Click Connect, sign in to GridIron Data and click Allow.
Then ask, for example, "Use GridIron Data: who are the top 10 WR projections this week in PPR?"
Claude (claude.ai and Claude Desktop)
- Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector.
- Name:
GridIron Data. URL:https://api.gridirondata.com/mcp. Leave the OAuth client fields empty. - Click Connect, sign in and click Allow. Turn the connector on in a chat from the tools menu.
Claude Code
claude mcp add --transport http gridiron-data -s user https://api.gridirondata.com/mcp
Then run /mcp inside Claude Code, pick gridiron-data and choose Authenticate; a browser opens for sign-in. Prefer your API key (no browser)? Pass it as a header:
claude mcp add --transport http gridiron-data -s user https://api.gridirondata.com/mcp \
--header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_KEY"
Cursor
Add this to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (all projects) or .cursor/mcp.json (one project). Cursor shows a Connect button that opens the sign-in page:
{
"mcpServers": {
"gridiron-data": {
"url": "https://api.gridirondata.com/mcp"
}
}
}
Or skip sign-in and use your API key from the dashboard:
{
"mcpServers": {
"gridiron-data": {
"url": "https://api.gridirondata.com/mcp",
"headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_KEY" }
}
}
}
Any other MCP client that speaks Streamable HTTP works the same way: OAuth sign-in, or an Authorization: Bearer YOUR_KEY (or x-api-key) header. Keep a key in a header or your client's secret store, never in a URL.
Run it locally instead (stdio)
The same tools also run as a single local file, for clients without remote MCP or if you'd rather keep it on your machine. You need your API key from the dashboard and uv.
1Download the server (a single file):
curl -o gridiron-mcp.py https://www.gridirondata.com/gridiron-mcp.py
2Register it with Claude Code, passing your API key. -s user makes it available in every project:
claude mcp add gridiron-data -s user \
-e GRIDIRON_API_KEY=YOUR_KEY \
-- uv run "$(pwd)/gridiron-mcp.py"
uv run installs the one dependency (the MCP SDK) from the file's header the first time it launches.
Without uv
# download + install the dependency into a venv
curl -o gridiron-mcp.py https://www.gridirondata.com/gridiron-mcp.py
python3 -m venv gridiron-mcp-venv
gridiron-mcp-venv/bin/pip install "mcp>=2,<3"
# register it (absolute paths)
claude mcp add gridiron-data -s user \
-e GRIDIRON_API_KEY=YOUR_KEY \
-- "$(pwd)/gridiron-mcp-venv/bin/python" "$(pwd)/gridiron-mcp.py"
Verify
In ChatGPT or Claude, the connector shows as connected with 18 tools. In Claude Code, claude mcp list shows gridiron-data as connected (run /mcp to see its tools). Then just ask:
> What are the top 10 RB projections for week 5 in half-PPR?
> How did Justin Jefferson do in 2023?
> Any injury news on Malik Nabers this week?
> What's the chance Drake Maye throws over 245.5 yards this week? (Pro)

A free key covers player lookups and this week's projections; the rest needs Basic ($5/month) or Pro ($29/month, the betting plan). A tool outside your plan answers with the plan it needs and a link to the plans, and the assistant tells you. The hosted server always has the newest tools; a downloaded copy needs downloading again.
Player names, positions, and ids are matched case-insensitively — say a player however you like.
Troubleshooting
- Sign-in page says the link expired — the sign-in has 15 minutes. Start again from your assistant (Connect / Authenticate).
- Asked to sign in again — you regenerated your API key, your plan ended, or you haven't used the connection for 30 days. Reconnect and sign in.
- "unauthorized" with an API key — the key is missing or wrong. Check it on your dashboard (regenerating a key retires the old one).
- "Not available on this account's current plan" — that question needs Basic or Pro; see plans.
- Server won't start — make sure the path in
claude mcp addis absolute (the$(pwd)/…above handles that), and thatuv(or your venv Python) is on your PATH. - Remove or re-add —
claude mcp remove gridiron-data, then run the add command again.
