What is the Nightwatch SEO MCP?

It's an official Model Context Protocol server that exposes your Nightwatch rank tracking, AI visibility, and site audit data to any MCP-compatible AI client — Claude, Cursor, Windsurf, ChatGPT, Continue, and more. Once connected, your AI assistant can answer questions and run analyses against your live SEO data without leaving the chat.

What is MCP (Model Context Protocol)?

MCP is an open standard that lets AI assistants connect to external data sources and tools through a single, typed interface. Instead of each tool building a custom integration, MCP servers describe their capabilities once and every compliant client can use them. The Nightwatch SEO MCP is one such server.

Which AI clients are supported?

Anything that speaks MCP. We test against Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, ChatGPT (via desktop connectors), Continue, Cline, and Zed. As new clients adopt the protocol, they work with the Nightwatch server automatically.

How do I connect Nightwatch to Claude or Cursor?

Generate a scoped API key from your Nightwatch settings, drop the JSON config from this page into your client's MCP configuration file, and restart the client. The server is available as both an npx package and a hosted SSE endpoint — pick whichever your client supports.

Is the SEO MCP read-only?

By default, yes. API keys are scoped to read access on rankings, audits, and reports. You can opt into write-capable scopes (creating projects, scheduling reports) on a per-key basis.

Do I need to be on a paid plan to use the MCP?

The MCP server is included on every paid Nightwatch plan, and during the 14-day free trial. Rate limits match your plan's existing API quotas.

Does this replace the Nightwatch dashboard?

No — it complements it. The dashboard is still where you configure projects, set up tracking, and review long-running reports. The MCP is the conversational layer on top, so you can interrogate the same data through any AI agent.
