Connect Claude or ChatGPT

  1. In Claude, open Settings → Connectors, choose Add custom connector and paste https://api.itemtally.com/mcp (once ItemTally is listed in Claude’s directory, you can add it from there too). In ChatGPT or another client, add a custom connector with the same address.
  2. Sign in to ItemTally. Pick the workspace to connect and the access:
    • Read: look things up: items, stock, who has what, the logbook and reports.
      • Read and propose changes: also prepare hand-overs, returns, stock changes, new items and imports. Only owners and admins can choose this.
  3. Press Allow, then ask: “What’s low in the store room?”, “Who has the projectors?”, “What’s free next week?”

Changes wait for your Confirm

The assistant never changes your register on its own. It prepares the change and shows it to you, with the exact items, people and dates. Nothing is written until you press Confirm on the card (in Claude), or say yes when your assistant asks. A prepared change expires after 15 minutes.

After you confirm, the receipt has an Undo button for stock changes, hand-overs and due dates. Undo works for 24 hours. Both entries stay in the logbook.

What the assistant can see

It acts as you, with your role and your folder limits, in the one workspace you chose. Every change is logged with your name and how it arrived, for example “via Claude”.

Disconnect

Settings → API and MCP → Connected assistants lists every connection: which assistant, who connected it, its access and when it was last used. Revoke stops it at once. A connection also stops if the person who made it leaves the workspace, and it drops to read-only if they’re no longer an owner or admin.

Create an API key

For scripts, Zapier, the REST API, or an assistant that can’t sign in, open Settings → API and MCP and choose Create key. Pick the access:

  • Read only (free)
  • Read and write (free)

The key is shown once. Send it as a bearer token (Authorization: Bearer itk_live_…). The MCP address accepts keys too, for example in Claude Code. A write key acts as the editor who created it, and it stops working if they stop being an editor.

Ask inside the app

Press ⌘K (Ctrl+K) and choose Ask the register… to ask the same questions without leaving the page. It acts only when you confirm.

The REST API

Start with the developer guide: a two-minute quickstart, concepts and recipes. Every endpoint is listed with an example in the API reference.

Webhooks

Under Settings → Webhooks, add an endpoint for signed POST requests, or a Slack message. Events include items created, updated, archived, checked out and checked in, movements, loads, counts posted, reservations, low stock, overdue loans and counts due. Webhooks are free on every plan.

Still stuck? Email [email protected] with what you're trying to do. A person who works on ItemTally answers, usually within a business day.
