SummarizeVideo.ai

Endpoint and authentication

https://mcp.summarizevideo.ai/mcp

The server uses the Streamable HTTP transport. Send every request with your agent key in the Authorization header as a Bearer token.

The server does not support OAuth sign-in. An MCP client that can only connect through OAuth cannot use it.

Create an agent key

Agent keys are created on the agent keys page while you are signed in.

  • Summarize and read: the agent can start summaries and read them. New summaries count toward your account's limit.
  • Read only: the agent can read summaries and transcripts that already exist, and summarize_video is not offered.
  • Each key expires after 7, 30, 90, or 365 days. You can have up to 10 active keys.
  • The page shows a new key once. Copy it then, or create another key.
  • Revoke a key on the same page when you stop using it or think someone else has it. A revoked key stops working on the next request.
  • The MCP server only accepts agent keys. Your website sign-in does not work as an MCP credential.

TypeScript SDK connection (verified)

Verified on 17 October 2026 with @modelcontextprotocol/client 2.3.1: one public, captioned 2-minute video URL became a completed summary and a Markdown export. The first check, about 30 seconds after submission, found the summary ready.

In a Bun project, install @modelcontextprotocol/client@2.3.1 with pnpm add, save this code as mcp-client.ts, and set SUMMARIZEVIDEO_TOKEN in your process environment using your shell or secret manager. Run bun mcp-client.ts to connect and list tools. The sample lists tools without starting a summary; use the workflow below when you want to generate one.

import { Client, StreamableHTTPClientTransport } from "@modelcontextprotocol/client"

const agentKey = Bun.env.SUMMARIZEVIDEO_TOKEN
if (!agentKey) {
  throw new Error("Set SUMMARIZEVIDEO_TOKEN before connecting.")
}

const client = new Client({ name: "my-video-agent", version: "1.0.0" })
try {
  await client.connect(new StreamableHTTPClientTransport(
    new URL("https://mcp.summarizevideo.ai/mcp"),
    { requestInit: { headers: { Authorization: \`Bearer ${agentKey}\` } } }
  ))
  console.log((await client.listTools()).tools.map((tool) => tool.name))
} finally {
  await client.close()
}

Create an agent key in another tab after copying your setup. Keep the key out of source files. See the official TypeScript SDK for client APIs.

Claude Code setup (documented)

Copy the config and launch command below first. When the hidden prompt is ready, create an agent key in another tab with Summarize and read access and the shortest expiry you need. Keep the key tab open, then copy the key and paste it at the prompt.

Add this config to.mcp.json in your project directory. If the file already has servers, add the summarizevideo entry under mcpServers. The config contains a variable name; keep your key out of the file.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "summarizevideo": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.summarizevideo.ai/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer ${SUMMARIZEVIDEO_TOKEN}"
      }
    }
  }
}

From your project directory, run this Bash command on macOS or Linux. Then copy your agent key and paste it at the hidden prompt. The command sets SUMMARIZEVIDEO_TOKEN and starts Claude Code without putting the key in shell history. Clear the clipboard afterward.

bash -c 'read -r -s -p "Agent key: " SUMMARIZEVIDEO_TOKEN && export SUMMARIZEVIDEO_TOKEN && printf "\n" && exec claude'

Approve the project server when prompted, then open /mcp and check that summarizevideo is connected. On other systems, set SUMMARIZEVIDEO_TOKEN in the environment of the terminal that launches Claude Code, using your shell or secret manager.

This setup follows the official Claude Code MCP instructions.

Other clients must support Streamable HTTP and a custom Authorization header. Their configuration formats differ; the Claude Code JSON above is specific to Claude Code. OAuth-only clients cannot connect.

Tools

summarize_video

Takes a public video URL and an optional summary language. Returns a requestID right away, before the summary is ready. Asking again for the same URL and language returns the same requestID instead of starting another summary.

get_summary

Takes the requestID. The state is pending while the video is processing, done with the Markdown summary, or error with the reason.

get_transcript

Takes the requestID of a finished summary and returns the plain-text transcript in pages of up to 50,000 characters by default. When more text remains, the response includes nextStartCharacter. Pass it back as startCharacter to read the next page.

How an agent summarizes a video

  1. Call summarize_video with the video URL.
  2. Call get_summary about every 30 seconds until the state is done or error. Long videos without captions take longer.
  3. Show the summary. Key points can start with a timestamp for the moment the supporting words were spoken.
  4. Call get_transcript only when the user wants quotes or details the summary leaves out.

Replace <VIDEO_URL> in this prompt with a public video URL:

Summarize <VIDEO_URL>. Use summarize_video once, then check get_summary about every 30 seconds until done or error. Save the returned Markdown to summary.md, keeping the timestamp links.

Connection and processing help

401 Unauthorized

Check that SUMMARIZEVIDEO_TOKEN is set in the terminal that launched Claude Code, and that the header is Authorization: Bearer followed by your agent key. Remove surrounding whitespace. Website sign-in tokens do not work. Check the key's expiry or revoke it and create a replacement on the agent keys page, then restart the client with the updated variable.

Pending server approval or missing summarize_video

Approve the project server in Claude Code when prompted. A Read only key offers get_summary and get_transcript, but cannot start a summary. Create a Summarize and read key if you need to generate one.

Summary state is pending

Keep the returned requestID and call get_summary about every 30 seconds. Do not start another summary to check progress. Stop on done or error; videos without captions can take longer. Save the summary field as Markdown when done. There is no separate MCP export tool.

Manage or replace your agent key.

Limits

  • Summaries started through MCP use the same limits as the website: 2 free summaries in any rolling 24 hours, or the remaining credits on a Founding Pass.
  • An account can process 2 videos at the same time.
  • Only public video URLs work. File uploads, playlists, and podcast feeds are not supported.
  • Videos without captions are transcribed from the audio, for videos up to 90 minutes.
  • Summaries are private to the account that requested them. A requestID from another account returns not found.

See pricing and limits for the Founding Pass terms.
