Music MCP server

Let ChatGPT or Claude search a real music catalogue and send you tracks you can actually play. They already know music. This gives them the parts they can't do on their own: confirming a song exists, and putting it somewhere you can hear it.

Remote server over streamable HTTP. Authorised with OAuth, so there is no API key to paste and no token to keep anywhere. Free. You'll sign in to a SonaPrompt account when you connect, which takes one click with Google or Apple.

Two tiers, and you pick at connect time.

Any account gets:

• Search a real music catalogue
• 30-second previews you can play
• Open any track in Spotify or YouTube Music

With an Apple Music subscription you also get:

• Read your playlists, so it never suggests what you already have
• Add songs to your playlists

Without a subscription you still get everything in the first list, and the preview page works whatever you stream on. You can connect Apple Music later by reconnecting.

What you can ask for

Once it's connected, the conversation goes like this:

• "Find me instrumental post-rock that builds slowly, nothing after 2010."
• "What's in my Morning Run playlist?"
• "Add three songs that fit it, but nothing already in there."
• "Make me a playlist for a rainy Sunday and put eight tracks in it."

The assistant reads the playlist first, so it won't suggest songs you already have. Every song it names is resolved against the real Apple Music catalogue, so an invented track fails to resolve rather than reaching you. And it hands back a page where you can hear 30-second previews of everything before you commit to adding it.

Connecting it

Claude

1. Settings, then Connectors, then Add custom connector.
2. Paste https://sonaprompt.com/mcp as the remote MCP server URL.
3. Click Connect. A browser window opens asking you to sign in with Apple Music.
4. Approve, and the tools appear in your next conversation.

ChatGPT

1. Settings, then Connectors, then add a connector by URL.
2. Paste https://sonaprompt.com/mcp, then authorise with Apple Music when prompted.

Custom connectors are not available on every ChatGPT plan. If you don't see the option, that's why.

Claude Code

Any client that speaks MCP over streamable HTTP with OAuth will work. Discovery is standard:

Dynamic client registration is supported, so there is nothing to register by hand.

The tools

On any account

• search_catalog — search the catalogue. Confirms a song is real and returns its id.
• preview_links — turns a list of songs into one page of 30-second previews you can play.

With Apple Music connected

• list_playlists — your Apple Music playlists.
• get_playlist_tracks — every song already in one of them. This is what stops duplicate suggestions.
• add_tracks — adds songs to a playlist, or creates a new one. Songs already there are skipped.

Four of the five are read-only. add_tracks is the only one that writes, and your assistant will ask you to confirm before it runs. If you connect without Apple Music, the last three aren't registered at all, so your assistant can't offer you something it can't do.

What it can and can't reach

The connection is scoped to playlists:read and playlists:write. In practice:

• It can list your playlists, read what's in them, create a playlist, and add songs.
• It can't delete a playlist, remove a song, rename anything, or play music.
• It never sees your Apple ID or your password. Apple's sign-in happens on Apple's page.

Your Apple Music user token is encrypted at rest and used only to serve your own requests. Revoke it whenever you like from the connection page or by removing the connector in your assistant. See Privacy for the detail.

Requirements

• A SonaPrompt account, created in one click with Google or Apple when you connect.
• A client that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth.
• An Apple Music subscription only if you want the playlist tools.

When it doesn't work

• "The Apple Music connection is no longer valid" — the token expired or was revoked. Reconnect from the connection page.
• The assistant names songs but gives you no link — ask it to call preview_links. That's the page where you can actually hear them.
• It suggests songs already in the playlist — ask it to read the playlist first. get_playlist_tracks is what prevents this.
• Nothing appears after authorising — start a new conversation. Most clients only load tools at the start of one.
• You subscribed to Apple Music after connecting — reconnect and choose Connect Apple Music. The tool list is decided when the connection is made.
