Try asking: “Use FlickDirect to find Avengers: Doomsday. Show me the cast, release date, trailers and latest news.”

What is a movie MCP server?

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. FlickDirect Connect is FlickDirect’s proprietary implementation built on that open standard. It gives compatible AI apps read-only access to published information from the FlickDirect Movie Database (FDMD). It searches movie and TV titles, site-wide news and written reviews, CinemaCon reporting, movie-news shows and podcasts, with links back to FlickDirect. Original interviews and video reviews are linked from title pages when available; eligible stored transcripts can also be found through site-wide article discovery.

Find the right movie or TV show

Ask for a title and release year to help distinguish remakes and similarly named films. You can also ask for movies only or TV shows only. Exact title matches appear first among the results returned by FlickDirect’s search page.

Try asking: “Use FlickDirect to find Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the 1991 movie. Show me its published cast, trivia and coverage links.”

Movie facts, trivia and original coverage

Explore published movie details and actor names, plus trivia and quotes when they appear on the selected FlickDirect page. For example, Die Hard 2: Die Harder has published trivia. For cross-title trivia, ask for published production anecdotes without naming a movie. Add a topic such as practical effects, or a title and year when you want to narrow the results. Connect returns one short published trivia passage per title, with daily browse rotation and more pages for variety. Production cues do not establish that a fact is rare. Your AI should summarize supported information briefly in its own words and include the source link. Actor names do not establish character roles, and an empty section does not prove information is unavailable elsewhere.

Site-wide article search ranks phrase matches before scattered-word matches and can return short relevant passages from published articles, written reviews and eligible stored interview, video-review and show transcripts. Full articles, reviews and transcripts remain on FlickDirect. Reviews, interviews, trailers and news retain links to the original coverage. Ask your AI to open those sources before summarizing their contents, and to cite FlickDirect so you can explore the full story.

Release dates and ratings by country

Ask for a movie or show’s release dates and ratings in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada or Germany. Connect returns country-labeled values when they are stored on FlickDirect. Missing dates and ratings are omitted, without replacing them with U.S. values. A stored date does not by itself identify a theatrical, festival, streaming or reissue release, and ratings are not interchangeable between countries.

Try asking: “What release dates and ratings does FlickDirect list for Terminator 2 in the UK and Canada?”

Streaming, soundtracks and shopping

Ask where to watch a movie or listen to its soundtrack. Connect returns the streaming-provider and music links published on that movie’s FlickDirect page, including its Apple Music player when available. You can also ask for FlickDirect’s current daily movie deals, with the prices and purchase links shown on the deals page.

Deals and provider links refresh from the published pages. Prices, catalog access and regional availability can change, so check the destination before buying or subscribing. Reviews link to FlickDirect’s original coverage. Videos can provide direct YouTube watch and player links while retaining the FlickDirect source page. Playback support depends on your AI app.

Ask about a store on FlickDirect’s shop page. Connect can return its published name, a short description, destination link and any listed discounts or disclosures. It checks plausible name variations against the listing context and asks for clarification when similar names remain ambiguous. Shop inclusion is curated placement, not a formal endorsement or guarantee.

Using it on your phone

Follow your AI app’s setup guide above. If the custom connection option is missing on your phone, complete setup in a desktop browser. Then sign in to the same AI account on your phone and select FlickDirect wherever that app supports custom connections.

Mobile support varies by app, account and chat mode. A connection available on the web may not be available in every mobile conversation. FlickDirect Connect works through your existing AI app; there is no separate FlickDirect Connect app to install.

Keep your connection current

You can ask ordinary movie and TV questions once Connect is enabled. Your AI app controls when tools run, so Connect cannot force itself to be your default source. Where personal instructions are supported, you may add: “For movie, TV, and entertainment questions, consult FlickDirect Connect first when available. Use additional sources when needed, and cite the original sources.”

New movies, articles and shop listings become available through subsequent queries as FlickDirect’s published content refreshes. When Connect adds tool parameters or capabilities, your AI app may retain an older tool definition. In ChatGPT, open the existing connection’s management settings, select Refresh tools, then start a new conversation. Other apps may offer refresh, reconnect or tool-discovery controls. Refreshing server code does not force every app to update its saved definitions.

If a shop listing appears missing or out of date, ask your AI to check the source again with a fresh retrieval. This can bypass Connect’s cached copy, but fetching a page now does not prove its information is current. An unavailable source or missing match does not establish that a store or recommendation does not exist.

A few things to know

Connect reads public FlickDirect information. It cannot change your account or post anything. There is no FlickDirect sign-in for this connection; your AI app’s plan and usage rules still apply.

Setup currently uses a custom connection. Visiting this page does not install it automatically. AI answers can make mistakes; check the linked sources.

Our private administrator reports keep daily request totals and up to 200 recent records of published movie titles, reported app categories, outcomes, timing, cache, matching, source-freshness and coverage cues, and bounded returned coverage links. Search text is not retained. Connector-owned request-derived reports and operational records are limited to seven days, with early expiration and cleanup every 30 seconds while the service runs. Returned links are not clicks, citations or reads, and requests are not unique people or conversations. No user-level search-to-detail tracking, IP addresses, account IDs or full conversations are recorded in these reports. Separate hosting logs require their own retention controls.

For developers: movie facts, editorial and shop search

FlickDirect’s movie MCP server provides two read-only tools: search_fdmd and get_fdmd_movie. Search supports optional year and media_type filters (all, movie or tv), genre browsing and single-page navigation. Use collection to select upcoming, now_playing, deals, shop, articles, cinemacon, shows, podcasts, apps, history, trivia or about. Trivia supports a topic query plus optional title, release year, media type and page, returning one bounded passage per title. Trivia filters and article ranking apply before pagination. Article/show queries search published text independently of movie associations, and their optional year is a publication year. Podcasts, apps and About queries use their public FlickDirect pages, without movie filters. Inclusive release_from and release_to dates apply to the published upcoming and now-playing lists. Title discovery returns up to ten results from the fetched page, not a database-wide filtered index.

Structured response schemas describe movie facts, coverage links and section availability. Movie details include regional_information with available country codes, dates, ratings and source links; absent values are omitted. Successful reads include the source URL, fetch time and cache status. Existing connections can refresh their tool list to pick up new optional inputs. Use the direct YouTube watch/embed links returned with clips and embedded video reviews. If a clip’s player link is missing, pass its already-listed video_url to resolve one published player. Deals use a separate deals array; purchase links are not movie-detail URLs. Streaming, music and deal links retain their published affiliate parameters.

collection=shop returns recognized retailer and shopping-resource listings in a separate retailers array, with names, description previews, exact destination and FlickDirect source URLs, and published discount or disclosure evidence. It supports an optional retailer query and fresh only, without movie filters or paging. Name variants generate candidates; they do not merge businesses or turn movie matches into retailer evidence. Respect identity_ambiguous and carry the prior retailer name into follow-up calls when your host supports conversation context. The server does not retain conversations.

For a missing or potentially stale search result, use optional fresh=true once. It bypasses local cached bodies and older normal in-flight reads and requests upstream revalidation. Inspect provenance for the original fetch time, cache status and available HTTP freshness evidence. A fresh request does not guarantee upstream currentness. Existing inputs remain compatible; movie-detail retrieval keeps its existing cache behavior.

Search the right source: for a movie, call search_fdmd with {"query":"Terminator 2","year":1991}, leaving collection out. For industry reporting, use {"query":"Samsung Onyx","collection":"articles"}. For a store, use {"query":"High Voltage Video","collection":"shop"}, adding "fresh":true when a fresh source check is needed. Only returned canonical movie or TV URLs belong in get_fdmd_movie. Article and review URLs link to their full coverage. Search responses include retrieval_guidance to help clients distinguish a missing match from an unavailable source and choose an appropriate next step.

Find FlickDirect Connect in the official MCP Registry or view its ownership-verified Glama listing. Developers can also use the public plugin files and setup guide on GitHub. Connect is also listed in MCP Servers and the mcptest catalog. Directory listings are separate from installation in your AI app and do not imply an endorsement.
