Documentation

Most guides to Claude custom connectors start with "paste your server URL". That's fine if someone already built the server. If the tool you need doesn't exist yet, you're stuck.
Smia fills that gap. You add Smia to Claude once as a custom connector. Then you describe the job, and Claude builds the tool, tests it and turns it on in the same chat. No code, no server to run.
This page covers how to add the connector, how to sign in, a worked example, example prompts, and what your tools can and can't do.
What Smia does
Smia hosts small tools you design from chat. Each tool is a short chain of steps (math, text, web requests, email, or apps like Google Workspace and Microsoft 365). It lives on your own server URL, and you decide which coworkers get it.
How to add a custom connector in Claude
You need a Claude account. Anthropic allows custom connectors on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. On the Free plan you can add one custom connector.
- In Claude, go to Customize > Connectors.
- Click Add custom connector.
- Name it
Smiaand enter this URL:https://app.smia.io/mcp - Click Add, then Connect. Smia's sign-in page opens.
If Claude asks how people should sign in, choose Sign in now. If it asks about the OAuth client, choose Register automatically, not "Use Claude's published identity". You don't need a client ID or secret.
On a Team or Enterprise plan, an Owner adds Smia for the organization under Organization settings > Connectors > Add > Custom (choose Web if asked), with the same URL. Each member then finds Smia under Customize > Connectors and clicks Connect.
To use Smia in a conversation, click +, open Connectors and make sure Smia is on.
Sign in or create your account
The sign-in page is on smia.tools, Smia's sign-in domain. Sign in, or create a free account with Google, GitHub, Microsoft or email. If you sign up with email, confirm your address first. New accounts accept the terms once, then approve the connection, and you're back in Claude.
Every new account gets a personal hub on the Free plan. A hub is where your tools, your coworkers and your settings live.
Create your own Claude connector tool: a worked example
Say you bill 950 NOK per hour and keep doing the same sum by hand. Paste this into Claude:
Build me a tool that turns hours into an invoice amount at 950 NOK per hour, test it with 6 hours, then turn it on.
Here's what happens in the chat:
- Claude looks up the steps it needs in Smia and creates the tool. New tools start switched off.
- Claude tests it with 6 hours. The test shows the result of each step, and the answer: 5,700 NOK.
- Claude turns the tool on. It's now a named tool on your server, not a one-off answer.
Use it right away:
Use the invoice tool for 12.5 hours.
You get 11,875 NOK, worked out by the same steps every time. Need a change? Ask for it:
Change the invoice tool so it adds 25% VAT, test it with 6 hours again, then turn it back on.
If a test fails, Claude sees which step failed and why, fixes that step and tests again.
(The exact wording of Claude's replies will differ. The tool name is whatever Claude picks, and you can ask for a specific one.)
Share it with a coworker
Invite a coworker to your hub, from the Smia app or by asking Claude ("Invite kari@example.com to my Smia hub"). They sign in with their own account and click Accept on the invite in the Smia app, and then your tools show up in their chat. They can use the same Smia connector, or your server URL (it looks like https://smia.tools/your-hub/mcp).
On the Free plan, a hub has up to 5 people, counting pending invites, and everyone in the hub can use every tool on your server. Choosing who gets which server is on Hobby, and per-tool roles are on Pro.
Example prompts
- "List my Smia tools."
- "Build me a tool that turns hours into an invoice amount at 950 NOK per hour, test it with 6 hours, then turn it on."
- "Use the invoice tool for 12.5 hours."
- "Show me what each step of the invoice tool does."
- "Change the invoice tool so it rounds to whole kroner, then test it again."
- "Which plan is my hub on, and how many tools do I have left?"
- "Invite kari@example.com to my hub."
What your tools can and can't do
What a tool can do
- Work with numbers, text, dates and lists.
- Call web services. API keys go in your hub settings, never into the chat. When a tool needs a key, Smia gives Claude a settings link to send you.
- Send email.
- Use Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Drive) and Microsoft 365. Each person signs in to their own account. Microsoft Teams message search may need your Microsoft admin to approve access once.
What it can't do, or not on the Free plan
- Free plan limits: 1 server, 5 tools on it, 100 steps per tool, 5 seconds per run, 512 KB of output per step, 1,000 tool runs a month, 10 emails a month and 200 web requests a month.
- Four steps are Pro only: custom code, interactive views in the chat (tables, charts, choices), PDF rendering and Excel workbook editing with code.
- Tests run for real. If a tool sends an email or calls a web service, the test does that too.
- Tools run when your chat calls them. They don't decide anything on their own. Running a tool on a schedule or from a webhook (Tasks) is on Hobby and Pro.
- Through the Smia connector, Claude can only run enabled tools in hubs you belong to, with the access you have there.
- Tools take typed inputs, such as text, numbers and lists. If you paste a table, Claude turns it into a list for the tool.
Data and privacy
Smia sees what Claude sends to Smia's tools (the tool name and its inputs) and what those tools return. Hub secrets and sign-in tokens are stored encrypted. On Free and Hobby, Smia keeps usage records (who ran which tool, when, and whether it worked) and may keep the latest test run for debugging. Full run history is a Pro feature.
Smia may use tool designs (steps and settings, never secrets or sign-in tokens) and de-identified usage data to improve Smia. Pro hubs can ask to opt out.
