What is an EAN?

EAN, or EAN13, stands for International Article Number (originally European Article Number). It is an extension of the UPC codes and you'll find them as barcodes on most everyday products. Sometimes the barcode is also called GTIN or GTIN13 (Global Trade Identifier).

Which information is included in an EAN?

The EAN code contains the country of origin, the manufacturer, and a product number. It also includes includes a checksum for verification.

When you only look at the barcode, you can't easily see which product it belongs to. This website provides an EAN lookup, that tells you the product the EAN code belongs to.

Is this EAN database complete?

Currently the database includes over 1.07 billion different EANs. That is huge, but still only a subset of all the EANs ever issued.

Is there an API to query the EAN database?

For all automated queries, please use oue barcode API. You can use the API to integrate our database into your own applications (see some barcode API examples). We also provide programming libraries for many popular programming languages.

How can I make more searches per day?

Due to the enormous amount of bots and scrapers, we have to limit the numbers of searches users can make on this website. To make more searches, you have to sign up for an account.

New: I'm no programmer, how can I do bulk EAN lookups?

Get an account and use our Excel assistant to upload a list of EAN codes and download the lookup results instead of doing barcode lookups manually.

Can I use a barcode scanner?

Yes, you can use a professional barcode scanner and feed us the scanned barcodes through the API or in an Excel sheet to look up the products in our database. You can also use your smartphone or webcam to scan barcodes online. On Linux, you can use zbarcam-qt or BarcodeScanner to scan and look up barcodes.

Can I download the full EAN database?

When you get an account you can select which part of the database you want to download. Please refrain from automatic crawling of the public website. Access will be blocked completely for excessive usage.

Is an ISBN number also a valid EAN code?

You can convert 10-digit ISBN numbers (ISBN-10) into ISBN-13 numbers. The ISBN-13 numbers are valid EAN codes and are located in "bookland" with the prefixes 978 and 979. Our ISBN search automatically does the conversion and shows both versions.

How can I submit EAN codes?

You can submit barcodes that are missing in our database for free (manually or as Excel sheet).

We do not sell any EAN codes, but you can get them from GS1 or a reseller, like Bar Codes Talk or Barcodes Mania.
