Documentation

The scientific literature, mapped by its citations

Start from a paper you know. See what it cites, what cites it, and what sits nearby, across 225.6 million scholarly works.

How it works

Three steps from one paper to a reading list

  1. 01

    Search

Type a title or an author, or paste a DOI, PubMed or MAG ID, or a link to the paper.
  2. 02

    Explore

Your paper opens as a graph of related work. Add up to ten origin papers to find the work between topics.
  3. 03

    Keep

Save papers to your library, export them to your reference manager, and hear when new papers cite them.

Where the related papers come from. They are found in the citation network: papers cited alongside your origins, and papers that cite the same work, ranked together. The similarity view then links papers that share authors, keywords, title words and publication years.

The citation map, colored by topic diversity

The citation map

139 million papers in one picture

Every paper we can place, laid out so that papers citing each other sit together. Nobody drew the fields on; they emerge from the citations.

  • Free to browse, no account needed
  • Recolor by field group, topic diversity or year
  • With a free account, click any spot to list its most cited papers

A citation graph around one paper

Citation graphs

Every paper, with its neighbourhood

Switch between the citation view and the similarity view, and lay the graph out by force, on a timeline or radially around your origins.

  • Combine several origins for cross-topic searches
  • A permanent link for every graph, to share or bookmark
  • Your graphs kept in History to come back to

Your library

Keep what you find, and follow it

  • Collections and export

File papers into nested collections and export them as BibTeX, RIS or CSV for Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote and the rest.
  • New citations

Monitor a collection and its new citing papers appear in Updates, with an email digest when there are some.
  • Zotero

On Individual, connect Zotero to pull your library in and send papers back. It only ever adds; nothing in Zotero is deleted.

AI assistants

Use Paper Nexus from Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor

Paper Nexus runs an MCP server, so an assistant can search the literature and pull recommendations for you, with every result linking back here.

  1. Add the server as a connector in your assistant.
  2. Sign in with your Paper Nexus account and approve it.
  3. Ask for papers. Graphs it builds land in your History too.
