Installs into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and more

Documentation

Server URL

https://micompress.com/mcp

Remote MCP server over Streamable HTTP. No account or sign-in is needed. An optional personal API key raises the size limits (see Limits).

Claude (claude.ai and Claude Desktop)

  1. Open Settings → Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
  2. Name it MiCompress and paste https://micompress.com/mcp as the URL.
  3. In a chat, enable MiCompress from the tools menu and ask Claude to compress a file by its link.

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http micompress https://micompress.com/mcp

With an API key:

claude mcp add --transport http micompress https://micompress.com/mcp --header "X-API-Key: mc_your_key"

Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf and other clients

Add a remote server to the client's MCP configuration, for example .cursor/mcp.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "micompress": {
      "url": "https://micompress.com/mcp",
      "headers": { "X-API-Key": "mc_your_key" }
    }
  }
}

The headers block is optional. VS Code uses the key servers instead of mcpServers and needs "type": "http".

Files on your own computer

A hosted server cannot read files on your disk. For local files, run the open-source local server instead, which reads the file from the path you give and writes the result next to it:

claude mcp add micompress -- npx -y micompress-mcp

Source and setup for other clients: github.com/micompress/micompress-mcp.

Tools

ToolWhat it doesType
compress_file_from_urlDownloads the file at a public URL, compresses it and returns a download link with the size before and after. Arguments: url (required); filename, preset (lossless, recommended, extreme), max_width (images only) — all optional.Write (creates a new file; never changes the original)
get_compression_resultReturns the result of a compression that was still running when compress_file_from_url answered. Argument: job_id.Read-only
list_supported_formatsLists the formats that can be compressed and the size limit for this connection.Read-only

Links that work: direct download links, Google Drive share links (“Anyone with the link”) and Dropbox share links. A link to a web page that only shows the file will not work. Compressed files are available for 24 hours. Most files finish within a few seconds; large videos may take longer, in which case the assistant gets a job_id and checks back with get_compression_result.

Privacy

The server receives only the tool arguments — the file link and options — never your conversation, other files or chat history. Downloaded originals are deleted within about 10 minutes and compressed results within 24 hours. Full details: Privacy Policy, section 10.
