krawlup MCP documentation

Every krawlup MCP tool, what credential it needs, and what it costs. New here? The /mcp page gives the tour. This page is the reference: setup for OAuth and agent keys, the full tool catalog, the REST twin, the terminal CLI, and the limits that keep the endpoint fast for everyone.

Introduction

krawlup runs a Model Context Protocol server over streamable HTTP. It is stateless: no session id is required, and responses are plain JSON. Once connected, an agent reads your products' scores, the failing audits behind them, AI fix cards, first-party analytics and keyword ideas. With extra scopes it can also start full rescans, add products from a URL, and publish them to the public directory, while every payment stays in your browser.

EndpointPOST https://api.krawlup.com/mcp Copy

Connect your agent

One endpoint, every client. Where a client supports both paths, the OAuth flow needs no key at all; an agent key works everywhere and is the only credential that can carry rescan by default. A browser-approved connection gets read + submit, plus rescan only when the client explicitly asked for it and the consent screen listed it (the terminal CLI below does); denying returns the agent to its redirect with error=access_denied. Connections and keys are both managed on the AI agent page.

Claude Code connects over streamable HTTP with one command; the browser handles the approval.

OAuth recommendedAgent key

  1. 1Run this in your project root.
  2. 2When the agent first needs krawlup it opens your browser; approve while signed in.
  3. 3The connection sticks. Manage or remove it on the DashboardAI agent page.

Windsurf, Zed and VS Code accept the same mcpServers JSON shape as Cursor. Scopes, limits and every tool: krawlup.com/docs.

Agent skills

Instead of (or alongside) MCP, teach your agent krawlup directly. The official @krawlup/skills package installs two plain-markdown skills: krawlup-mcp (all 26 tools, scopes and rate limits) and krawlup-analytics-setup (installing the cookieless tag and wiring conversion goals). No code, just instructions your agent reads.

npx @krawlup/skills

Skills land in ./skills by default. Point --dir at your agent's skills folder (for example --dir .claude/skills) and use --force to overwrite an older copy.

Authentication and scopes

CredentialHow it authenticatesBehavior
Anonymousno Authorization headerThe three public catalog tools only. Invalid credentials get a 401 with an OAuth challenge, never a downgrade.
Agent keyAuthorization: Bearer sk_ag_…Created on the AI agent page in your dashboard. Scopes read (always) plus optional rescan and submit; optional expiry date and product restriction; shown once at creation.
OAuth connectionAuthorization: Bearer sk_mc_…Granted through OAuth 2.1 with PKCE after one browser approval. Scopes read + submit (never rescan). One-hour access tokens, 90-day rotating refresh tokens.

Scopes

read

Every reading tool: products, insights, fix cards, scan history, analytics, keyword ideas. Unlimited calls; costs nothing.

submit

add_product (5 adds/hour), set_product_public and set_product_private (10 flips/hour). Publishing is paid-only; the agent never spends money.

rescan

trigger_rescan and run_keyword_research (they spend plan allowances), plus the rank-tracking board writes. Agent keys only: never granted to OAuth connections.

Agents see only their own products. Revoking a key or disconnecting a connection stops the agent on its very next request.

Tool reference

26 tools. Every call is throttled to 60 requests per minute per credential unless a tighter limit is shown. Limits shown in orange differ from that blanket.

Public catalog

No credential. Any agent can explore the public directory before its founder connects anything.

ToolCredentialDescription
search_productspublicSearch the public catalog of directory products in plain language.
get_productpublicThe full public product page, by slug or key.
check_launch_readiness30/minpublicAudit a URL before adding: bans, blocked platforms, whether the product already exists (and who owns it), plus the optional category list. Run this before add_product.

Free site report

No credential — the /site-report tool, for any website. Two full scans per calendar month per agent (the credential, or the IP when anonymous — the same limit the website tool enforces, in a separate budget from browser visitors); reads are unlimited. Domains already listed as krawlup products are refused.

ToolCredentialDescription
get_site_reportpublicThe free public site report for any website (the /site-report tool): performance, AEO, CRO, SEO crawl, CrUX, OpenRank and the named checks. Cached read; poll after run_site_report until scanStage clears.
run_site_report6/minpublicStart the free public scan for any website and return immediately. Same 2-full-scans-per-month limit as the website tool, counted per agent (credential, or IP when anonymous).

Your products and insights

Any credential with the read scope (agent keys always carry read; OAuth grants it by default). Reads mirror the dashboard exactly: insights, scan history and the bottleneck analysis stay readable on any plan state (the same read-only view an expired subscription sees); fix cards additionally require the ai_fix_cards facility and keyword ideas plus rank history the keyword_research facility. compare_products always lists products and scores; its visitor columns need website_analytics and its revenue columns analytics_conversion.

ToolCredentialDescription
list_productsany credentialYour products on krawlup with their latest scan scores — the source of product keys for every other tool.
get_my_products_statusreadYour products with their directory visibility.
compare_products10/minreadAll your products side by side, sorted by any column: unique visitors, views, revenue totals with refunds netted, average revenue per conversion, and scan scores — lifetime or over a window (today / 7d / 30d / 90d). Visitor columns need the website_analytics facility and revenue columns analytics_conversion (gated columns come back null with a note).
get_my_subscriptionreadThe founder's current subscription: plan, status (active / trial / 3-day grace / expired), abilities, limits (0 = unlimited), this period's usage meters, and what the founder can currently do. Call this first.
get_insightsreadFull latest report for one product: performance/AEO/authority scores, failing audits, the recommended First Edit, and unresolved AI fix cards (require the ai_fix_cards facility).
get_fix_cardsreadEvery stored AI fix card for one product — what/why/steps plus a paste-ready agent prompt per issue. Requires the ai_fix_cards plan facility.
get_bottleneckreadThe stored AI bottleneck analysis — the one edit that matters most, why now, expected impact, steps.
get_scan_historyreadScore-over-time series (last 100 scans): performance, AEO, OpenPageRank, with per-run source and timestamp.
get_keyword_ideasreadStored keyword research: intent-clustered keyword ideas with search volume/difficulty estimates, prioritized content actions, and a per-keyword verdict (own/push/hard/skip). Requires the keyword_research plan facility.
get_keyword_ranksreadRank history for the tracked keywords, as checked by the scanner: latest position (null = checked, outside the top-10), best position, and the series of stored checks. Requires the keyword_research plan facility.

First-party analytics

Requires an active subscription (or the 3-day renewal grace window). Conversion events additionally require the analytics_conversion facility and the stored AI insight the analytics_ai_insights facility — without them they are stripped from the response.

ToolCredentialDescription
get_analytics_snippetreadThe exact
get_analytics_tokenreadThe raw site token for the product's analytics tag (the data-site value). It is not a secret — it ships in the tagged page source by design. Use it for hand-written tags, the @krawlup/analytics-tag npm package, or custom integrations; get_analytics_snippet already embeds it.
get_website_analyticsreadFirst-party analytics for the product's own website: visitors, sessions, bounce, top pages/referrers/countries, AI crawler visits (AI answers / indexing / training, with a partial flag when a crawler query failed) — conversion events and AI insights when the plan carries those facilities.

Directory management

submit scope. set_product_public additionally requires a paid plan; the 403 explains the trial/upgrade state. Adding always starts private.

ToolCredentialDescription
add_product5/hoursubmitAdd a product from just its URL: scrapes the site (name, tagline, description, icons) and adds it to the dashboard. Adding never publishes — the product stays private until set_product_public.
set_product_public10/hoursubmitPublish an added product to the public directory. Paid plans only, or an admin-approved publishing grant covering the product (the 403 explains the trial/upgrade state).
set_product_private10/hoursubmitRemove a product from the public directory (always allowed).

Scanning and keyword tracking

rescan scope, agent keys only: OAuth connections are never granted it. trigger_rescan and run_keyword_research spend the same plan allowances as their dashboard buttons; add_tracked_keywords and remove_tracked_keywords are free but rescan-scoped because they change what the scanner spends on later passes.

ToolCredentialDescription
trigger_rescan10/minrescan · keys onlyStarts a fresh full analysis in the background and returns immediately; poll get_insights until scanPending is false. Spends the same plan allowances as a dashboard rescan.
run_keyword_research6/minrescanRuns one keyword research for a product (autocomplete sweep clustered into intent groups with volume/difficulty estimates and content actions). Spends one of the founder's monthly keyword-research runs — the same budget as the dashboard button. Requires the keyword_research plan facility.
add_tracked_keywords30/minrescanAdds keywords to the product's rank-tracking board (max 25 per product). The scanner checks tracked keywords on its scan passes; get_keyword_ranks reads the checked positions. Requires the keyword_research plan facility.
remove_tracked_keywords30/minrescanRemoves keywords from the rank-tracking board — their stored check history is deleted with them. Requires the keyword_research plan facility.

REST API

The same agent key authenticates a small REST twin under /agent/v1, for scripts that do not speak MCP. Scope, budget and gating rules match the MCP tools 1:1.

MethodRoutePurpose
GET/api/agent/v1/subscriptionThe founder's plan: status, abilities, limits and this period's usage meters.
GET/api/agent/v1/productsYour products (public and private) with latest scores.
GET/api/agent/v1/products/overviewAll products side by side, sortable: visitors, views, revenue totals and averages, scores — lifetime or ?range=today|7d
GET/api/agent/v1/products/{key}Full insights snapshot for one product + an agent-actionable summary (First Edit, fix cards, bottleneck).
GET/api/agent/v1/products/{key}/keywordsStored keyword research (intent clusters, volume/difficulty, content actions).
POST/api/agent/v1/products/{key}/rescanStart a full rescan (rescan scope, 10 requests/minute per key). Returns remaining allowances + poll instructions.
POST/api/agent/v1/productsAdd a product from a URL (submit scope). Same pipeline as the browser form; the product starts private.
POST/api/agent/v1/publishFlip a product's directory visibility (submit scope; requires a paid plan or admin-approved publishing access for that product; 10 requests/hour).

Terminal (CLI)

@krawlup/cli (source on GitHub) is your krawlup account in the terminal: portfolio, products, scan scores, website analytics and keyword boards, with rescans that spend the same plan allowances as the dashboard buttons. Signed in once through the browser, everything after that is plain text at typing speed — and every number it shows comes straight from your account's own reports, so it can never drift from the website. On top of the account commands it carries ten local checks that run entirely on your machine — no account, no key, nothing touches krawlup's servers (see Local checks below). It runs on Node.js (≥ 18) or Bun (≥ 1.2). Without arguments in a terminal it opens an interactive prompt; with arguments (or outside a terminal) the same commands run once and exit, which is what scripts and CI use.

Install and run

Zero install — run it directly with your preferred runner:

npmbunpnpmyarn

npm Copy

npx @krawlup/cli

Or install it globally so the krawlup binary is everywhere:

npmbunpnpmyarn

npm Copy

npm install -g @krawlup/cli

Sign in and sessions

krawlup login opens your browser: approve the Krawlup CLI connection once and the terminal picks the tokens up on a localhost callback. The consent screen lists exactly what you grant — read your data, rescan to start scans, and submit to manage listings — and the one-hour access tokens rotate silently afterwards. The session sits at ~/.krawlup/session.json (mode 0600, written atomically so a crash can never truncate your refresh token). Revoke any time from the dashboard's AI agent page, or run krawlup logout, which revokes the token family server-side and forgets the session on top of it.

VariableEffect
KRAWLUP_APIMove the API base (default https://krawlup.com). Must stay https — localhost is allowed for a dev API, because the session token travels on every request.
KRAWLUP_KEYStatic escape hatch for CI and headless runs: an agent key from the dashboard AI agent page. Wins over the stored browser session; a 401 on it means the key is dead.

A per-install device id (~/.krawlup/device-id, a random UUID — no hardware fingerprint, nothing cross-site) travels as x-krawlup-device so the server can keep the CLI's quota pool stable. Delete the file and you are a new device as far as anyone can tell.

Command reference

In the interactive prompt every command starts with / (tab completes, ↑↓ recalls history, esc steps back, ctrl+c exits); one-shot mode drops the slash: krawlup analytics myapp.com 30d --json. Products resolve fuzzily — exact key, then exact title, then prefix, then substring — so myapp usually suffices. Two commands are interactive-only: /open (the live redraw-in-place pane with overview, insights, analytics, keywords and history tabs) and /clear.

CommandArgumentsWhat you get
overview[range] [sort]Portfolio table: visitors, views, revenue, scores. Ranges lifetime|today
products—Every product, public and private.
openinteractiveLive product pane: redraw-in-place tabs for overview, insights, analytics, keywords and scan history. Press r inside to rescan (asks first).
insightsOverall score, failing audits, First Edit and AI fix cards.
analytics [today|7d30d]
keywordsRank board with trends plus stored ideas and their verdicts.
historyLast 100 scans as a trend.
research [seed]Run keyword research. Spends a monthly run — the interactive prompt asks first; one-shot mode runs it directly.
track <kw…>Add keywords to the rank board.
untrack <kw…>Remove keywords from the board.
scanTrigger a full re-scan and wait, streaming progress (esc stops waiting in interactive mode; the scan keeps running). Spends your budget.
addReadiness-check a URL, then add it as a product (starts private).
publishMake a product public in the directory (paid plan only).
unpublishMake a product private again.
snippetThe analytics tag plus the excluded-pages board.
exclude <paths…>Replace the excluded-pages board (none clears it).
subscription—Plan, status and usage meters.
login[api]Sign in through the browser (OAuth). Optional API base for a dev API.
logout—Revoke the tokens server-side and forget this machine’s session.
clearinteractive—Clear the screen history.
help—List every command.
  • Spending asks first — in interactive mode. Research spends a monthly run and rescans spend your full-analysis budget; the prompt confirms before running either. One-shot mode has nobody to ask, so krawlup scan and krawlup research spend immediately — script accordingly.
  • Scan waits honestly. After triggering, the CLI polls every 5 seconds; esc stops waiting while the scan keeps running, and one-shot mode prints progress to stderr so stdout stays clean for piping.

Local checks — no account, no API

Ten commands that run entirely on your machine — no login, no key, no quota; nothing touches krawlup's servers. Every verdict is tri-state: something that could not be measured (a blocked fetch, a DNS failure) reports as unknown, never as a pass or a fail. The spot commands take seconds; check composes all of them and takes about a minute. Snapshots for diff live at ~/.krawlup/snapshots/.

CommandArgumentsWhat you get
reportThe free full site scan + report — nothing to sign up for. --md prints the markdown export, --json the raw payload. The per-device pool is whatever the server reports.
checkThe composed battery: TLS certificate, security + cache headers, email records, AI-crawler access, structured data, the social card, depth-1 links and extractable text. --md renders a shareable markdown report.
robots [--agent] [--path]Which AI crawlers may read the site, from robots.txt — same parser as the scanner. With --agent GPTBot --path /blog/x it answers one question: may this agent fetch this URL?
mailSPF, DKIM, DMARC and MX records with the exact DNS record to add for each gap. Missing SPF/DMARC are the two most common real deliverability failures.
sslCertificate validity, issuer, expiry countdown and protocol version.
headersSecurity + cache header audit (HSTS, CSP, MIME sniffing, framing, referrer, COOP, caching) with the exact header to add.
text [--as-bot]What an LLM sees: the page stripped to extractable text, word count and heading outline. --as-bot fetches with the GPTBot user-agent.
schemaJSON-LD structured-data lint: types present plus required properties per type (Organization, Product, Article, FAQPage, LocalBusiness, …).
linksDepth-1 broken-link check: statuses, redirect chains, mixed content. Probes up to 40 links.
ogSocial-card lint: og:image/title/description, twitter:card — plus the exact text X/Slack will show when the link is pasted.
diff [--reset]Snapshot a page’s text (~/.krawlup/snapshots/); every later run reports the drift — added/removed lines, title change, word delta.

Scripting and exit codes

Every data command accepts --json for machines — same renderers, JSON payloads, and errors printed as {"error": true, "message"} instead of human text; --md prints the markdown export of the report and the local checks. Exit codes stay honest: 2 means the usage was wrong, you are not logged in, or the session died and you must log in again; 1 means the server refused (its sentence is printed verbatim) — or, on the local checks, that a concrete finding was measured, so scripts and agents can gate on the code. The local checks never need a login. In CI, where no browser exists, put an agent key from the dashboard AI agent page in KRAWLUP_KEY and call the CLI non-interactively. Agents that would rather speak MCP than spawn a terminal point at https://api.krawlup.com/mcp — the terminal and your agent read the same tools.

Install the analytics tag

krawlup's first-party analytics is 4,221 bytes parsed, 1,762 bytes gzipped and 100% cookieless: pageviews on load and on SPA route changes, scroll depth (max % reached per page, beaconed as visitors cross 25/50/75/100% plus a final deepest-point beacon when they leave), custom conversion goals, checkout attribution, and it honors Do Not Track. Every product gets its own token on the Dashboard products Website tab, or your agent can fetch it itself with the get_analytics_snippet MCP tool — the snippet returned embeds the token at data-site="…" — or get the bare value from get_analytics_token. Agents never need to ask you to paste the token.

Don't want your admin area or logged-in pages counted? Each product has an Excluded pages board (Dashboard product Tracking Setup). Add a path like /admin and it excludes exactly that page and everything under it (/admin/settings too — while a lookalike like /administrator stays tracked). Excluded hits are discarded at intake: never stored, and never counted toward your plan's limits. The rule applies to every integration (script tag, npm, WordPress, Shopify pixel) because enforcement is server-side, takes effect within about a minute, and never changes past data.

Avoid Duplicate Tracking: If you previously added the manual HTML , remove it after enabling the Web Pixel to prevent duplicate visitor counts.

Limits and budgets

  • Free site report reads are unlimited; scans are not: get_site_report is a cached read with no cost, while run_site_report spends one of the same two full scans per calendar month the /site-report website gives you — counted per agent credential (or per IP when anonymous), in a budget separate from browser visitors.
  • 60 requests/minute per credential across all tools; tighter per-tool limits are shown in the tool tables.
  • Reads are free and unlimited within the rate limit — no read consumes plan allowances. Some reads are facility-gated exactly like the dashboard: fix cards need the ai_fix_cards facility and keyword ideas the keyword_research facility; conversion events and the stored AI insight arrive only when the plan carries theirs.
  • Rescans spend plan allowances: one full analysis plus one page-speed check per billing period, exactly like the dashboard button.
  • Keyword tracking is capped, and its history is real: a product tracks up to 25 keywords; every scan pass checks up to 10 of them (least-recently-checked first) and stores the actual top-10 result — positions are never interpolated, and a null position means checked-but-outside-the-top-10, not "no data".
  • Publishing is paid-only: set_product_public works on an active paid subscription; trial users must upgrade first. The agent never pays for anything.
  • Analytics needs a subscription: get_analytics_snippet, get_analytics_token and get_website_analytics answer only while the subscription is active or inside the 3-day renewal grace window.
