state accepts a 2-letter code (TX), a slug (texas) or a name. answers is an object keyed by field id from get_document_fields; list fields take arrays of objects. Money fields are numbers in USD; dates are YYYY-MM-DD.
Resources: formsbystate://catalog (JSON catalog), formsbystate://docs. Tool schemas are deliberately small (~4 KB total) so the server is cheap to keep connected.

Pro — no key needed. Add https://formsbystate.com/mcp/ as a connector; the client shows a Connect button right away and you sign in once. Purchases and subscriptions follow the email you sign in with, so use the account that holds them. This is standard MCP OAuth, so any client that supports it works. When the account covers a document, render_document also returns 24-hour download links for the typeset PDF and Word file, for chat clients that do not show binary tool results.
API keys — email hello@formsbystate.com. Send the key as Authorization: Bearer fbs_…. Keys can be revoked in one click; only a hash is stored.
Limits & behaviour
- 120 requests/minute per IP. Watermarked previews are not metered;
clean: truewithout a plan answers401withWWW-Authenticate, which is the client’s cue to offer sign-in and then retry the same call. - Drafts created by
render_documentare kept 30 days under an unguessable id; thecontinue_urlopens them in the web wizard. - PDF preview is returned inline as a base64 resource (≈30–60 KB).
format: "text"returns the full document text. - Errors come back as
isErrortool results with a plain message; never stack traces. - Every call is logged (tool name, document, state, hashed IP) for abuse prevention and the honest "documents created" counter. No answers are stored except in drafts you create.
