CNR (Case Number Record)

A CNR is the unique 16-character identifier for every case in the eCourts system.

Cause List

A cause list is the daily schedule of cases to be heard in a specific courtroom. Each entry shows the case number, parties, assigned judge, expected hearing time, and case status. Use the Cause List Search endpoint to query schedules across courts.

Credit-Based Pricing

Most authenticated endpoints consume credits per request. Court structure endpoints and enum reference are free. Check your account balance and see the pricing page for details.

LegalCheck Jobs and Billing

LegalCheck is asynchronous. Submit once, save the returned data.code, poll its status_url, and fetch its report_url only after the job is completed. The resource code identifies the LegalCheck;meta.request_id identifies one HTTP request for support and diagnostics.

A newly accepted job costs ₹99 on PAYG or ₹33 with an active subscription. All status, report, list, and model reads are free. A terminal processing failure is refunded once to the original credit pools.

Each partner may have up to three jobs queued or running. Use a stable Idempotency-Key when retrying a submission so network retries cannot create another job or charge.

Important: Search results do not include a "case title" field. Construct a display title using petitioners/respondents arrays (e.g., "ABC Ltd vs XYZ Corp").

Array parameters are passed by repeating the key (litigants=A&litigants=B). A comma inside one value is part of that value, not a separator. The supported field lists (sortable, facetable, projectable, presence-filterable) are machine-readable via Search Capabilities below — prefer it over hardcoding.

Every search needs a primary criterion. Supply one of name, epic, q, or a complete household key. Everything else narrows a search but cannot start one — relativeName, stateCode, age and the rest are filters, and a request carrying only those is rejected with 400 MISSING_SEARCH_CRITERIA and not charged.

Charged flat per request, however many persons or occurrences come back. A request rejected for invalid paging or shape is not charged, and neither is one that fails with INTERNAL_ERROR.

A household lookup is exclusive. householdRollId, householdPartNumber and householdHouse must be supplied together (400 HOUSEHOLD_INCOMPLETE otherwise), and cannot be combined with name, relativeName, epic or q (400 HOUSEHOLD_EXCLUSIVE).

page and pageSize must each be between 1 and 100. Values outside that range are rejected with HTTP 400 at both ends rather than silently adjusted, so a page you did not ask for is never returned and never charged. A single query therefore reaches at most 9,900 records — to go further, narrow it with more filters rather than paging deeper. These ceilings are lower than the 200 allowed by Case Search.

matchedOn explains why a person matched. score is the underlying relevance score and matchScore is a normalised 0 to 100 value. deleted marks an elector removed in a later revision, and partFlags carries extraction quality flags for the roll part the occurrence came from.

Full JSON includes source evidence and available electoral kin, including retained details after a refusal. Read engine.electoral.outcome, note and used_in_court_search before interpreting the record. A retained identified object does not override a refusal.

Use the returned report and log URLs. API-only partner jobs use JSON for HTML/print links; linked web reports use the existing report page and its print control. Model and rubric links point to the report metadata JSON. Court search logs are returned by the scoped log endpoint.

The example is illustrative full canonical JSON. Verify material findings against linked court records and read the report’s limitations, instructions and provenance.

Legal Check Search Log

Fetch the ordered record of every search the engine ran for a completed LegalCheck, and what it concluded from each one. This is the URL the report returns as engine.search_log_url.

Entries are in the order the engine issued them, so the array reads as the reasoning behind the report: what was asked, what came back, and what that settled. A run that stopped early says so in its own decision text rather than simply ending.

total is not always a number. Treat a non-numeric value as a status, and read decision for what it meant to the report.

Billing: charged per distinct section returned. Citations the corpus cannot resolve (section: null) are free, and two citations of the same section — e.g. 351(2) and 351(3) — are charged once. One section's worth of credit is checked up front; once the case is read your balance must cover every distinct section returned, otherwise the answer is 402 INSUFFICIENT_CREDITS with no data and no charge. A case with no recorded citations returns an empty provisions array at no charge.

Case Detail already returns the citations themselves for free in courtCaseData.provisions (act as written, actKey, unit, number, and India Code actUrl/url links). Call this endpoint when you also need the section text and offence classification.

The example above is abridged: section text is trimmed with "…", some citations and equivalents are omitted, and the last entry illustrates an act the corpus could not resolve. BNS 3 is not an offence, so its offence and offence_source are omitted.

Get one section of an act from the India Code corpus: heading and text, whether it is an offence and how it is punished, and its old/new code equivalents (IPC ↔ BNS, CrPC ↔ BNSS, Evidence Act ↔ BSA).

Get up to 50 sections in one request. Each section found is returned with the same act and section shape as Get a Section; entries that are not held come back in not_found.

Billing: charged per distinct section returned. Entries in not_found are free, and two requested numbers that resolve to the same section are charged once. Before the work starts your balance must cover the full batch size at the per-section rate (402 INSUFFICIENT_CREDITS otherwise), but only the sections actually returned are charged.

requested echoes each entry as normalised (trimmed, unit defaulted), so you can match results to inputs. Compare it with section.number: a sub-clause such as 318(4) returns section 318.

The text values above are trimmed with "…" for readability. Each entry carries the full section, with the same fields as Get a Section.

Section Equivalents

Get only the old ↔ new code mapping for a section (IPC ↔ BNS, CrPC ↔ BNSS, Evidence Act ↔ BSA), without the section text. Lighter than Get a Section when all you need is a "now BNS 318" badge.

Resolve an Act Name

Turn an act name as you have it ("IPC", "Indian Penal Code (I.P.C.), 1860", "Code of Criminal Procedure") into its India Code citation key. Returns a single match only when the name is unambiguous; otherwise the acts it could be, never a guess.

Implement exponential backoff when receiving 429 responses. Wait 1s, 2s, 4s, etc. before retrying.

LegalCheck also allows at most three queued or running jobs per partner. A fourth new job returns 429 LEGAL_CHECK_QUEUE_FULL. Wait for one job to finish; do not rotate idempotency keys to bypass the limit.

verbosity=full increases the amount of allowlisted case detail; it does not expose private engine inputs, model processing material, or internal search data. Treat the report's limitations and disclaimer as part of the result.

Wrong Enum Codes = Silent Empty Results

If you pass wrong enum codes to search, you get 0 results with no error. Always verify codes using the Enum Reference endpoint or the enum tables below before searching.

Order AI Analysis is On-Demand (10-60s)

The order-ai endpoint performs on-demand processing from government court servers on first access. Expect 10-60 second latency. If aiAnalysis is null, retry up to 3 times with 15-30s waits. Fall back to order-md for raw text if needed.

Order Markdown Can Take Up to 300 Seconds

The PDF conversion pipeline is slow. Full order text is already available in Case Detail response under files[].markdownContent. Only use the order-md endpoint when you need the watermarked PDF for official submission.

High Court Codes Need Bench Suffix

High Court codes must include bench suffix for searching. DLHC returns 0 results — use DLHC01.

In state codes, SC represents the Supreme Court of India, not a state. It appears in the states list as "state": "SC", "stateName": "India".

Cause List Uses Offset Pagination

Cause list search uses offset-based pagination, not page numbers. To get page 2 with limit=20: offset=20. Next page: offset = previous_offset + limit.

courtNo vs court in Cause Lists

In cause list results, courtNo is the room number and court is the internal identifier. These are different fields — don't confuse them when filtering.

All Dates Use YYYY-MM-DD Format

All date parameters and response fields use YYYY-MM-DD format. Datetime fields include timezone suffix (Z).

Case Category is Free-Form in Case Data

Case category enum codes are search filters only. The actual caseCategory field in case data is free-form court text (e.g., "Constitutional Writ"), not a value from the enum.

Acts/Sections Filter — Exact Match, Very Limited Coverage

The actsAndSections filter requires the exact stored-text format and has very limited index coverage. Most cases do NOT have this field populated. The filter also doesn't appear in activeFilters.

For general act/section searching, use the query parameter instead. The actsAndSections filter is only reliable when you know the exact stored text format and the case has this field populated.

Refresh is Idempotent Within 15 Seconds

Calling refresh multiple times within 15 seconds is safe — no duplicates are created. Wait 5-10 seconds after queuing before fetching updated case details.

Best Practices

Cache responses: Store case details locally to reduce API calls and costs.
Batch operations: Use search to find multiple cases instead of individual lookups.
Handle rate limits: Implement exponential backoff for 429 responses.
Use refresh sparingly: Only request case refresh when you need the latest data.
Store request IDs: Log request_id from responses for support inquiries.
Make LegalCheck retries idempotent: reuse the same Idempotency-Key with the same body after a timeout or connection failure.
Honor asynchronous state: poll the LegalCheck status URL using Retry-After and fetch a report only after completion.

CNR Format

CNR (Case Number Record) is the unique identifier for every case in the eCourts system.

Format: {CourtEstablishmentCode}{CaseNo}{Year}
