DocSpring

official

Connect your AI assistant to DocSpring to set up PDF, Word, HTML and page design templates, fill them in, and send documents for signature. Sign in with OAuth, no API token to copy.

What can you do with DocSpring MCP?

  • Find templates and fields — List your DocSpring templates and show the fields on a specific one, such as a rental agreement.
  • Design and publish templates — Create a template from a description or a PDF, set up its fields, rename fields, and publish a new version.
  • Generate PDFs — Fill a template and produce a test PDF (free, watermarked) or a live PDF that uses your account credits.
  • Set up signature requests — Send a template to multiple signers in order, with reminders at an interval you choose.
  • Organize templates — Move templates matching a name pattern into a new folder.
  • Manage webhooks and email actions — With full access, create webhooks that send submissions to a URL and email actions that send your PDFs.

DocSpring’s MCP server lets an AI assistant work in your DocSpring account. It can find your templates, fill them in and generate PDFs and Word documents, create page designs, edit fields and publish versions, set up signature requests and manage folders, webhooks and email actions. It’s a remote server that uses the Model Context Protocol: you add its URL to your assistant and sign in to DocSpring. There’s no API token to copy.

RegionMCP server URL
UShttps://mcp.docspring.com/mcp
EUhttps://mcp-eu.docspring.com/mcp

Use the URL of the region your account is in. If you sign in to DocSpring at app-eu.docspring.com, your account is in the EU. The examples below use the US URL. For the EU, use its URL in the commands and config files, and name the server docspring-eu, as the DocSpring plugin does, so it doesn’t replace a US server named docspring.

For coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, Copilot, Gemini CLI), the DocSpring plugin adds the MCP server together with DocSpring’s agent skills, which teach the agent DocSpring’s workflows.

Connect your assistant

Add the URL to your assistant, then sign in to DocSpring in your browser and choose what the assistant can do (see Access).

No DocSpring account yet? Create one on the sign-in page your assistant opens, with Google, GitHub or your email, and connect it from there. Then ask your assistant to design your first template.

Claude

Claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude’s mobile apps share the same connectors. These buttons open Claude’s “Add custom connector” dialog with DocSpring’s URL filled in:

To add it by hand, go to Customize > Connectors, click + Add, then Add custom connector. Enter DocSpring as the name and the MCP server URL, then click Add and sign in. In a chat, turn DocSpring on from the + menu under Connectors.

Custom connectors work on every Claude plan (the Free plan allows one). On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner adds the connector in Organization settings > Connectors, then each member connects it from Customize > Connectors.

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http --scope user docspring https://mcp.docspring.com/mcp

Then run /mcp in Claude Code, select docspring and sign in. --scope user adds the server for all of your projects. If you’re signed in to Claude Code with a Claude subscription, a DocSpring connector you added in Claude is already there.

ChatGPT

Adding an MCP server to ChatGPT needs a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace, and only works on the web. In a Business workspace, an admin or owner adds it. ChatGPT Pro can add it with read-only tools.

  1. Open Plugins, click +, then Add custom MCP server.
  2. Enter DocSpring as the name, the MCP server URL as the connection, and choose OAuth for authentication.
  3. Confirm, click Create as a plugin, and sign in to DocSpring.

In a chat, type @ and choose DocSpring.

Codex

codex mcp add docspring --url https://mcp.docspring.com/mcp
codex mcp login docspring

The Codex CLI, its IDE extension and the ChatGPT desktop app share this configuration.

Cursor

Or add the server to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (every project) or .cursor/mcp.json (one project):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "docspring": { "url": "https://mcp.docspring.com/mcp" }
  }
}

Cursor asks you to sign in once it has added the server.

VS Code

Or run MCP: Add Server from the Command Palette and choose HTTP, or add the server to .vscode/mcp.json:

{
  "servers": {
    "docspring": { "type": "http", "url": "https://mcp.docspring.com/mcp" }
  }
}

VS Code opens your browser to sign in the first time it connects.

Other assistants

Any MCP client that supports remote servers (Streamable HTTP) with OAuth sign-in can connect: Gemini CLI, Zed, Goose and others. Add the MCP server URL as a remote or HTTP server, and the client opens DocSpring’s sign-in when it first connects. For example, in Gemini CLI:

gemini mcp add --scope user --transport http docspring https://mcp.docspring.com/mcp

Access

When you sign in, DocSpring asks you to choose what the assistant can do. Read and write is selected until you choose another:

AccessWhat the assistant can do
Read onlySee your templates, folders, submissions and their PDFs, your email actions and email domains, and check data against a template
Read and writeAlso create and edit templates and their fields, publish versions, generate PDFs, create signature requests, and add and check email domains
Full accessAlso delete templates, versions, folders and email domains, expire submissions, create webhooks that send your submissions and other events to a URL, and create email actions that email your PDFs

If an assistant asks for less than full access when it signs in, DocSpring lists what it asked for instead, and you connect it with that access or cancel.

The assistant only sees the tools that its access allows. MCP Server Tools lists them.

Each connected assistant is listed under Connected apps on the Integrations page in DocSpring. Anyone in the account can disconnect it there, and its access stops straight away. To change an assistant’s access, disconnect it and sign in again.

Live PDFs use your account’s credits, as they do through the API. Test PDFs are free and have a watermark, and the tools ask the assistant to make test PDFs unless you ask for a real document. Setting up a new template’s fields automatically uses your account’s free AI pages for the month, then credits, as it does in the template editor.

Example prompts

In a chat assistant:

  • “Design a certificate of completion template with the recipient’s name, the course and the date.”
  • “List my DocSpring templates and show me the fields on the rental agreement.”
  • “Create a template from https://example.com/form.pdf, set up its fields, then show me the first page.”
  • “Design a one-page invoice as a page design, with a table of line items and the total, then show me a preview.”
  • “Generate a test PDF of the invoice template for Acme Corp, with three line items of your choice.”
  • “Rename the name field on the contract template to full_name, then publish a new version.”
  • “Send the NDA template to Jane and then Sam to sign, in that order, with a reminder every 3 days.”
  • “Move every template with ‘Draft’ in its name into a new folder called Drafts.”

In a coding agent, working in your app’s repository:

  • “Create a DocSpring template from forms/application.pdf, set up its fields, and generate TypeScript types for its data.”
  • “Write the code that fills our onboarding template from a customer record with the DocSpring SDK, then generate a test PDF to check it.”
  • “Make a test PDF of the lease template for each customer in fixtures/customers.csv.”

Assistants that offer an MCP server’s prompts as commands also have Create a template, which designs a new template with you, from a description or from your PDF. It’s there when the assistant has write access. In Claude Code, type / and look for create_template: for a server added as docspring, it’s /mcp__docspring__create_template.

Security

  • An assistant with access can read your submissions’ data, which can include personal data. Connect only assistants your organization allows to handle it.
  • Text that an assistant reads, such as a PDF from the web or a submission’s data, can contain instructions meant to make it misuse its tools. Most assistants ask before they call a tool that changes something, and the tools that change or remove what’s already there (editing a template or its fields, renaming, moving, restoring a version, changing a webhook or an email action, deleting, expiring) are marked as destructive, so clients ask you to confirm each call. Choose Read only when the assistant only needs to look.
  • With full access, an assistant manages your webhooks, which send your submissions’ data to a URL, and your email actions, which email your PDFs. It can change all of them, including the ones you set up yourself, and what it sets up keeps working after you disconnect it. Choose Read and write when it doesn’t need them.
  • Assistants never see a webhook’s signing secret or its headers’ values: copy the secret from the webhook’s page in DocSpring (Webhooks in the sidebar), and add headers there.

Troubleshooting

The assistant doesn’t have DocSpring’s tools. Adding the server isn’t enough: sign in too. In Claude, click Connect next to DocSpring in Customize > Connectors, then turn it on for the chat from the + menu. In Claude Code, run /mcp and select docspring (docspring-eu for the EU). In Codex, run codex mcp login docspring (or docspring-eu).

Sign-in doesn’t know your account, or your templates aren’t there. You connected the other region’s server. If you sign in at app-eu.docspring.com, connect https://mcp-eu.docspring.com/mcp and name it docspring-eu; otherwise use https://mcp.docspring.com/mcp.

A tool you expected is missing. The assistant only has the tools its access allows: Read only has no tools that change anything. To change the access, disconnect the assistant under Connected apps on the Integrations page and sign in again. ChatGPT Pro only gets the read-only tools whatever you choose.

New tools don’t appear. Some assistants keep the list of tools they saw when you connected. Reconnect DocSpring, or refresh it in the assistant’s connector settings.

The assistant was signed out. That happens when someone in your account disconnects it in DocSpring, or when it hasn’t been used for 90 days. Sign in again from the assistant: in Claude, click Reconnect next to DocSpring in Customize > Connectors.

A tool returned processing. The PDF or template took longer than about 50 seconds. Ask the assistant to check it again: it uses get_submission or get_template.

Live PDFs fail with a credits error. Live PDFs use your account’s credits. Add credits on the Billing page. If the error says the PDF will be processed once you add credits, it’s made then, so don’t ask for it again. Test PDFs are free while you try things out, but combining PDFs always uses credits.
