Hit your Codex limit mid-task?
OpenAI meters Codex as agentic usage, shared with ChatGPT Work. Everyday chat in ChatGPT on the web is counted separately, so with DeskWink it can pick up the work on your computer while Codex resets. How it works with ChatGPT -
Feels like your agent got dumber?
It is one of the most common complaints about coding agents. Use whichever chat app and model gives you the best answers today, and switch any time: your folders, approvals and history stay the same. Works with -
Want Pro-level reasoning on your code?
The Pro reasoning models in ChatGPT are not offered in Codex. Through DeskWink they can read your project and, where your plan lets connectors make changes, propose edits for you to approve. -
Prefer Gemini?
Add DeskWink as a custom app in Gemini on the web, then use it in the Gemini apps too. Limited rollout Connect Gemini -
Agents on a server or VPS?
Run DeskWink on a Linux server and let your chat app work there, with the same folder rules and approvals. Coming soon -
Away from your desk?
Start a task from your phone and it runs on your computer at home. Works in the Claude and Gemini apps, and in ChatGPT on the web. Connect your AI -
Several computers, one chat.
Ask about your laptop, your desktop and your server in the same conversation. Free includes 2 computers.
What changes with DeskWink.
| Before | With DeskWink |
|---|---|
| Codex limit reached: work stops until it resets | Keep going in ChatGPT on the web, on its own allowance |
| Stuck with the model your agent ships | Choose the chat app and model you trust, including Pro models where your plan has them |
| Away from your desk means no work | Start from your phone; it runs on your computer |
| Every machine set up separately | One connector for all your computers and servers |
From install to your first request in three steps.
DeskWink is a small command-line program on your computer, plus one connector address in your AI app. You stay in the loop at every step.
-
Install the CLI
One npm command. It needs Node.js 22 or newer, on Windows 10 or 11, or macOS 13 or later.npm install -g @deskwink/cliCopy -
Pair this computer
Rundeskwink launch. It shows a link and a short code. You confirm in your browser, then choose a folder to share.deskwink launchCopy -
Connect your AI
In your AI app, add a custom connector with this address, sign in to DeskWink, and choose what it may do.https://mcp.deskwink.com/mcpCopy
Rather have your coding agent do it?
If you use Claude Code, Codex or a similar agent, give it one sentence. It installs and starts DeskWink; you still confirm the pairing yourself.
Install DeskWink on this computer by following https://deskwink.com/install.md. When it prints a pairing link, show it to me and wait for me to confirm.
Then ask your AI to…
- Browse folders See what is in the folders you shared.
- Read files Open documents, notes and code so the AI can work with them.
- Search by name Find the right file without you pasting paths.
- Propose changes Write or edit files, only after you approve the preview.
Running commands is planned for Pro and Power, off by default, and approved by you on your computer.
Built so you stay in charge.
DeskWink assumes an AI can be wrong or be tricked by what it reads. So the decisions that matter are made by you, on your computer.
Only the folders you choose
Your AI sees the folders you add and nothing else. Folders can only be added on your computer, never from the web or by the AI. Sensitive files such as SSH keys and .env files stay blocked even inside a shared folder.
- ~/DeskWink shared
- notes/ shared
- ~/.ssh blocked
- .env blocked by default
- ~/Documents/taxes not shared
Every change waits for you
Your AI proposes. You review the exact change and approve or reject it. DeskWink keeps a local backup first, so you can undo it with deskwink restore.
- TODO: write the summary + Renewals are up; two risks flagged. Reject Approve
Commands are approved on your computer
Off by default, and planned for Pro and Power. When on, each command appears in your own terminal and runs only after you approve it there. The web console can reject a command, never approve one.
$ deskwink approvals list
apr_8f3a npm test in ~/DeskWink/app
$ deskwink approvals approve apr_8f3a
No file contents stored
File contents pass through DeskWink on their way to your AI. They are never written to our database, logs or backups. We keep account details, computer and folder names, and a short activity record.
Database: metadata only
Emergency disconnect
One action in the console disconnects all your computers. On the computer itself, deskwink stop ends all work at once. You can revoke any AI app’s access at any time.
- Outbound only. Your computer connects out to DeskWink. It opens no inbound port.
- Starts when you do. DeskWink does not start at login by itself.
- The cloud can narrow, never widen. Only your computer can grant more access.

What does DeskWink do?
DeskWink lets the AI you already use, such as Claude or ChatGPT, work with folders on your own Windows PC or Mac. You install a small command-line program, pair it with your account, choose the folders to share, and add one connector address in your AI app.
Can my AI change my files without asking me?
No. Reading and searching the folders you chose does not need approval. Every change to a file is shown to you as a preview first, and nothing is written until you approve it. DeskWink also saves a local backup of the original before it applies a change.
Does DeskWink store my files?
No. File contents pass through DeskWink on their way between your computer and your AI app, but they are not written to our database, logs or backups. We keep account details, computer names and folder paths, and a short activity record (which tool, which path, when, and the result).
Which AI apps does it work with?
DeskWink works with remote MCP clients such as Claude and ChatGPT where your plan allows custom connectors. Whether you can add a custom connector depends on your AI provider and your plan with them. DeskWink does not change those plans or their limits.
Does DeskWink give me more AI usage?
No. DeskWink does not change any AI plan or its limits. It lets the chat app you already use work on your computer, and that app’s usage counts against its own limits. On ChatGPT plans, Codex is metered as agentic usage, separately from everyday chat, so when Codex runs out you can often keep going in chat.
Can I use Pro models through DeskWink?
If your AI plan includes them and the app lets connectors work with them, yes. DeskWink works with whatever model you pick in the app.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes, once you have added DeskWink on the web: in the Claude and Gemini apps, and in ChatGPT on the web.
Can I run it on a server?
Linux support is in progress. On Windows and macOS it works today.
