The Bible in your AI assistant

Ask Claude, ChatGPT or another AI assistant about the Bible, and let it answer from the text itself. This server gives the assistant the open translations, the Hebrew and Greek source texts and the study material on this site — and every answer links back to the page it came from.

Server address https://mcp.bible.flogvit.com/mcp Streamable HTTP · free · no account, no key · read only

It uses MCP (Model Context Protocol), the open standard AI assistants use to reach tools and data outside the chat. You add the server once; after that you ask as you normally would, and the assistant looks things up when it needs to.

Connect your assistant

Claude (claude.ai, desktop and mobile apps)

  1. Open Settings → Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
  2. Name it FLOGVIT.bible and paste the server address. Leave the OAuth fields empty.
  3. Choose Add. In a chat, open the + menu and check that FLOGVIT.bible is switched on under Connectors.

On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner first adds the connector for the organisation under Organization settings → Connectors.

ChatGPT

  1. On chatgpt.com, open Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced settings and turn on Developer mode.
  2. Back in Apps & Connectors, choose Create. Name it FLOGVIT.bible, paste the server address and choose No authentication.
  3. Confirm that you trust the application and choose Create. In a chat, choose + → Developer mode and add FLOGVIT.bible.

Developer mode is a beta feature of ChatGPT on the web. Which plans have it, and whether a workspace admin must allow it, is up to OpenAI.

Claude Code

Run this in a terminal:

claude mcp add --transport http flogvit-bible https://mcp.bible.flogvit.com/mcp

    }

Other MCP clients

Any client that can use remote servers over Streamable HTTP needs only the address. A client that can only start local servers reaches it through the mcp-remote bridge:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "flogvit-bible": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "mcp-remote",
        "https://mcp.bible.flogvit.com/mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}

To try the server without an assistant, start the MCP Inspector, choose Streamable HTTP and paste the address:

npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector

What the assistant can look up

The server has thirteen tools. You never call them yourself: ask in your own words, in any of the eight languages on this site, and the assistant chooses.

  • get_passage One or more passages, side by side in up to five editions, with the translators' notes if you want them Try asking: Show me Psalm 23 in English and Norwegian side by side.
  • search_bible Verses that contain all the words you give, in one edition, a book or a testament Try asking: Where does the Bible talk about forgiveness?
  • get_original_text The Hebrew or Greek of a passage, word by word with explanations (in Norwegian) Try asking: What does John 1:1 say in the Greek, word by word?
  • search_original_word Every verse where a Hebrew or Greek word occurs Try asking: Where else is the Hebrew word chesed used?
  • get_cross_references Related passages for each verse Try asking: Which passages are related to Romans 8:28?
  • get_chapter_study Summary, context, key words, people, themes, stories, prophecies, parallels and timeline for a chapter Try asking: Give me the background to Isaiah 53.
  • get_book_overview An introduction to a book of the Bible Try asking: What is the book of Ruth about?
  • search_people, get_person People of the Bible, their family and the key events of their lives Try asking: Who was Tamar?
  • search_topics, get_topic Stories, themes, prophecies and gospel parallels Try asking: Which prophecies point to the Messiah?
  • get_daily_verse Today's verse Try asking: What is today's Bible verse?
  • list_editions The editions and their licences Try asking: Which translations can you read, and what are their licences?

References may be written English or Norwegian style — John 3:16-18, Joh 3,16.18, 1 Cor 13:4-7 — with book names in all eight languages.

The editions and the licence

The assistant reads the same editions as this site:

Using the text elsewhere

OSEN, OSNB and OSNN are free to use, also commercially, under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0). They are translated from the SBL Greek New Testament, which has the same licence, so wherever you publish text from them — a sermon, a website, an answer you share — it must say where it came from: credit the SBLGNT with a link to sblgnt.com, name the licence, and credit tanach.us for the Hebrew.

The server makes this easy: every passage it returns ends with a source line that names the licence and links to the edition. Keep that line with the text.
