What you can ask

Six jobs, one connection.

App store optimization, keyword research, competitor analysis and market research usually mean six tabs. Here they are questions to your assistant, and each one is a call or two against the same data.

Research a market before you build

“How contested is AI calorie tracking in the US, and is it softer in Germany?”

Leaders, saturation and search visibility per storefront, read separately and never blended into one invented score.

get_market list_markets get_top_charts

Keyword research and rank tracking

“Which of my keywords dropped last month, and which apps took the places?”

Popularity, ranked apps and suggestions for any phrase and country. Tracked terms with day-by-day history.

get_keywords get_keyword_serp discover_keywords

Competitor analysis

“Who is beating me in search right now, and what did they take from me?”

Who shares your search niche, which terms they own, what they charge in each storefront, how their ratings move.

get_landscape get_competitors get_app

Reviews, read and answered

“What are my one-star reviewers complaining about this quarter?”

Filter by storefront, stars, text or unanswered. Draft replies in the reviewer's language and approve them before anything goes public.

get_reviews reply_to_reviews

Your downloads and proceeds

“Where are my downloads coming from: search, browse or referrals?”

Apple's own measured impressions, page views, downloads and proceeds for the apps you connect.

get_performance explain_period

What happened, and what needs action

“What happened to my apps last month? Anything I have not already been emailed about?”

One call for a period against the one before it, plus rank moves, chart entries, review spikes and competitor releases.

explain_period get_signals

Real requests, real answers

This is what comes back.

Four requests run against live App Store data on 1 October 2026. Nothing below is mocked: the numbers are what AppTail returned, with their dates and caveats.

25 tools

What it can read, and what it can change.

One tool per question shape, not one per screen. Reading is most of it. The few that change something say so, and your assistant has to be allowed to write.

Start here

  • get_account Your apps, plan and limits, App Store Connect health per app, and your focus storefronts. The call an assistant makes first.

What happened

  • explain_period "What happened last month?" in one call: the period against the one before, storefronts that moved, keyword changes, findings and review volume.
  • get_signals Rank moves, chart entries, review spikes, competitor releases and price changes, each with the numbers behind it.

Your measured performance

  • get_performance Needs App Store Connect Apple's measured impressions, page views, downloads, sales and proceeds, for one app or the whole portfolio, by storefront or source.

Keywords

  • get_keywords Tracked terms over any window: rank at the start and end, movement, daily history, and the same terms for named competitors.
  • get_keyword_serp Who ranked for a term in a storefront on a day you name, with names, subtitles and ratings. Works for terms you do not track.
  • discover_keywords Terms you could be tracking and are not, each labelled with its source: rivals, similar apps, store mining, your own listing.
  • add_keywords Writes Start tracking terms for an app in one storefront. Batches report an outcome per term.
  • remove_keywords Writes Stop tracking terms. Rank history is kept, so re-adding one does not start from zero.
  • tag_keywords Writes Sort a large keyword list into groups such as brand, generic and competitor, in one call instead of an afternoon.

Competitors and niche

  • get_landscape Who shares your search niche: every app, how many of your terms it ranks for, ratings, and the vocabulary you are missing.
  • get_competitors The rivals you track against an app, suggested rivals you do not, and how many more your plan allows.
  • add_competitors Writes Track rivals by name, App Store URL or id. "Add the three closest" is one call.
  • remove_competitors Writes Stop tracking a rival against one of your apps.

Markets

  • get_market Niche research for any phrase and storefronts: leaders, saturation, search visibility, vocabulary. Needs no app of your own.
  • list_markets The markets you have saved, with competition ranges and what changed.
  • save_market Writes Save a niche to watch, with seed terms per storefront.
  • edit_market_corpus Writes Pin a term the market should hold, or exclude one that does not belong.
  • remove_market Writes Delete a saved market, or just one storefront of it.

Any app in the store

  • search_apps Find any App Store app by name in any language, bundle id or URL.
  • get_app One app at the depth you ask for: listing, ratings by storefront, prices, charts, publisher portfolio, release history, screenshots.
  • get_top_charts Top free, paid and grossing charts by storefront and category.
  • add_app Writes Add an app as one of yours. Rankings, reviews and competitors start filling in.

Reviews

  • get_reviews Reviews over any window, filtered by storefront, stars, text or unanswered, with volume and rating trends beside them.
  • reply_to_reviews Writes Needs App Store Connect key Create, update or remove public review replies through your App Store Connect key. Dry run first, and drafts need your approval.

“Writes” means it changes your account. Research tools such as search_apps and get_market can import a public store record or cache a suggestion on our side so the next answer is faster, but they never add anything to your account. Clients such as ChatGPT ask you to confirm before a write runs.

Straight talk

What it will and will not do.

How it treats your data

Measured and estimated never mix.

Downloads and proceeds for apps you connect are Apple’s own figures. Competitor downloads and revenue are rolling 30-day third-party estimates, labelled as such, and a gap comes back as unknown, never as zero.

Writes are deliberate.

Tracking, tagging and market edits report an outcome per item, and previews are available. You can switch writes off on the Access page.

Public replies need you.

Review replies are drafted in the reviewer’s language, shown to you, and sent only after you approve the exact text.

No raw queries.

The assistant calls fixed tools with defined shapes. It cannot invent a metric or read a table it was not handed.

What it does not do

Google Play.

The MCP server covers the iOS App Store only.

A keyword difficulty score.

You get Apple’s popularity index, the ranked apps and how results are composed. A made-up number would not be evidence.

Publishing your listing.

It can research and draft titles, subtitles and keywords. You change them in App Store Connect.

Competitors’ private analytics.

Nobody outside an app’s own account sees its measured impressions or proceeds, so for rivals you get estimates and public signals.

FAQ

Questions before you connect.

What is the AppTail MCP server?

An MCP (Model Context Protocol) server at https://mcp.apptail.io/mcp that lets Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor and other MCP clients read AppTail's iOS App Store data and your connected apps' analytics, and answer ASO, keyword research, competitor analysis and market research questions in plain language.

Which assistants does it work with?

Any client that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth: Claude (web, desktop and Claude Code), ChatGPT on plans that allow custom MCP servers, Codex and Cursor. The setup steps for each are in the Connect section.

Do I need an AppTail account?

Yes. You sign in with your AppTail account when the client connects, and there is no API key to copy. Data access and tracking limits depend on your plan, and get_account reports them to the assistant.

Can the assistant change my account?

Only through tools marked as writes, and only if writes are allowed for your account: you can switch them off on the Access page in your console. With writes on it can track keywords and competitors, tag keywords, save and edit markets, add apps, and, with an App Store Connect key connected, reply to reviews. Public review replies are drafted first and need your approval.

Are the download and revenue numbers real?

For apps you connect through App Store Connect, yes: impressions, page views, downloads, sales and proceeds are Apple's own measured figures. For anybody else's app, downloads and revenue are rolling 30-day third-party estimates, and every tool that returns them labels them as estimates.

Does it cover Google Play?

No. The MCP server covers the iOS App Store only.

Does it give a keyword difficulty score?

No. It returns Apple's search popularity index, the apps that rank, and how the results are composed, and the assistant describes how competitive that looks in words. A made-up difficulty number would not be evidence.

Can it publish my App Store title, subtitle or keywords?

No. It can research, draft copy and recommend changes. Listing metadata is changed by you in App Store Connect. The one public write it can make is a review reply, with your approval.

Can an AI run raw queries against the data?

No. There is no query surface. The assistant calls a fixed set of tools that return defined shapes, with coverage, freshness and caveats attached.
