Ask Claude, or another AI assistant that connects to MCP servers, to run our free restaurant profit check. It asks you the same 12 multiple-choice questions as the check on this website and gives you the same free result. It can also cost one of your recipes as a draft, which you then check on our plate cost calculator, run our nine free calculators with your own figures (among them an estimate of your FICA tip credit, a check of your card fees and what your booking app costs per guest), check your website, list your tax, payroll and permit deadlines, and look things up in our guides and blog posts, with the source of each figure.

Is it working right now?

Every 10 minutes our own server connects to this one over the internet, the way your assistant does, and runs six real steps: it says hello, lists the tools, gets the 12 questions, runs a free check, runs a calculator on fixed figures and searches the library. A step passes only when the answer is right, not just when one comes back. These tests aren't counted as use.

Reading the latest test…

Don't take our word for it: connect from your own browser, right now. Nothing is counted or stored.

What it does

The server gives your assistant seventeen tools. All of them only read. The answers aren't stored; only an anonymous daily count of checks is kept. The same goes for recipes: only a daily count of drafts is kept. And for the figures you give a calculator: only a daily count of calculator runs is kept. And for a website you have checked: only a daily count of website checks is kept. And for your deadline calendar: only a daily count of calendars is kept. And for what your assistant looks up in our library: only a daily count of searches (a list counts as one) and reads is kept.

  • restaurantdoctor_get_questions lists the 12 questions and the answers each one accepts. Money ranges are in euros, pounds sterling, Swiss francs or Canadian, Australian or New Zealand dollars where that's your currency, and in US dollars anywhere else.
  • restaurantdoctor_run_free_check scores your answers against RestaurantDoctorAI's targets for your type of restaurant and returns your free result.
  • restaurantdoctor_cost_recipe costs a recipe's ingredient lines as a draft, in US dollars, as described below.
  • restaurantdoctor_check_website checks your restaurant's own website as our online check does: secure, made for phones, a menu phones and Google can read, online orders on your own terms or only through the delivery apps, tap to call, a title and description for Google, and Google's phone speed test. It says what to fix first and links to the full online check, which adds your Google listing and the places near you, free on this website.
  • restaurantdoctor_deadlines lists your restaurant's coming tax, payroll, license and permit deadlines from your state and a few yes/no answers, as our deadline calendar does: each date with its rule, what a miss costs and the official source, what to check with your state where we haven't confirmed a date, and a link to the same calendar on this website, where you can add your own license and permit dates and get free email reminders. Reminders, not legal or tax advice.
  • restaurantdoctor_search_knowledge searches our sourced library: our guides and blog posts, the step-by-step fixes from our paid report, RestaurantDoctorAI's targets by type of restaurant, sourced industry facts and our expert knowledge base of sourced how-tos, rules and checklists. It returns the passages that match, each with its link and source, so your assistant can answer from them and cite them. restaurantdoctor_list_knowledge lists what's in it, by kind, with the date of each guide and blog post, and restaurantdoctor_read_knowledge reads one of them in full, a long one in parts.
  • The other nine run our free calculators, as described below.

Your free result shows:

  • Your grade, from A to F, and how many of your 12 answers need attention.
  • A grade for each part of the business.
  • Your estimated profit leak, all the leaks together, a month and a year, or a note when your answers show no major leak.
  • Your biggest leak and its estimated cost a month, or your biggest opportunity when nothing leaks.
  • What one point of prime cost (1% of your sales) is worth a month at your sales range.
  • The first fix in your plan.
  • A link that opens the same result on this website, where you can change your answers.
  • A note that the full report is a paid report on this website, with its price and what it adds.

Estimates from 12 multiple-choice answers and RestaurantDoctorAI's targets; not financial, tax or legal advice.

Your recipe draft shows:

  • Each ingredient line as your assistant sent it, matched to a USDA food and weighed, after trimming.
  • What each line costs, at the prices you give your assistant or, where you haven't, at US public prices (store averages, wholesale prices and weekly store sale ads, which run low), with their source and date. None of them is what you pay.
  • What a line still needs before it can be costed, such as your price for it. Nothing is costed at 0.
  • The cost per plate as a range, and the lines whose prices move it most.
  • A link that opens the draft on our plate cost calculator. There you check each line against your recipe and add your prices; once your prices cover most of the cost, it shows one plate cost and the menu price for your target.

A draft from the recipe as sent, not checked against the original. It doesn't check allergens or work out nutrition.

The calculator tools are our free calculators, run with the figures you give your assistant, in any currency (the FICA tip credit, card fees and booking fee checks are for US restaurants, in US dollars). Each one gives the same result as the calculator on this website, says how it was worked out, and links to that calculator with your figures filled in. A figure you don't give is never counted as 0: your assistant asks you for it.

  • restaurantdoctor_prime_cost works out your prime cost (food, drink and labor as a share of your sales) for a week or a month, against the target for your type of restaurant.
  • restaurantdoctor_labor_cost works out your labor cost as a share of your sales, the staff hours next week's sales can pay for, or the sales per labor hour below which the first person goes home.
  • restaurantdoctor_break_even works out the sales you need each month, week and day open to pay every bill.
  • restaurantdoctor_plate_cost works out what one plate costs from your own pack prices, or takes a plate cost you know, and the menu price for your target food cost.
  • restaurantdoctor_delivery_price works out a dish's break-even price on a delivery app, from its price on your menu and the app's real commission rate.
  • restaurantdoctor_menu_calories works out a dish's calories from its recipe, rounded the way menus in the US, Ontario, or the UK and EU show them.
  • restaurantdoctor_fica_tip_credit estimates the FICA tip credit (IRS Form 8846) your business may have generated in a year, from your state, the tips reported through your payroll and your tipped staff's hours: first the reasons the real answer may be nothing, then the estimate, what it's worth after tax and the years that may still be open, to take to your accountant.
  • restaurantdoctor_card_fees works out what a month's card fees cost you for every 100 dollars of card sales, against a fair range for your type of restaurant, with what's realistic for your processor, what to ask it and the fees to question on your statement.
  • restaurantdoctor_booking_fees works out what your booking app, such as OpenTable, Resy, Tock, Yelp Guest Manager or Toast Tables, costs you a month, a year and for each guest it books, from your plan, your invoice and your guests last month, and what share of a guest's spend that is, with the platform's published prices and the date they were read.

Estimates from the figures you give; not financial, tax or legal advice. The calorie count is not a laboratory analysis. We don't file anything and we aren't accountants.

What's sent, and what isn't

  • For the free check, only your 12 multiple-choice answers and your country are sent to our server. The tool doesn't ask for your name, your restaurant's name, your email or any figures.
  • We use the answers only to work out your free result and don't store them. We keep only an anonymous count of how many checks are run each day.
  • For a recipe draft, only the recipe your assistant sends and any prices you give it reach our server. We use them only to work out the draft and don't store them; we count only how many drafts are made each day.
  • For a calculator, only the figures your assistant sends reach our server, and for a dish, its name and ingredients; for the FICA tip credit, card fees and booking fee checks, also your state and your answers, such as how the business files its taxes, who processes your cards or which booking app you use. We use them only to work out the answer and don't store them; we count only how many calculator runs are made each day.
  • For a website check, only your website's address reaches our server. We read that public page (and its menu page, if it links one) and send the address to Google PageSpeed Insights for its phone speed test. We don't store the address or what the page says; we count only how many website checks are run each day.
  • For your deadline calendar, only your state and your answers (such as whether you have staff or serve alcohol, and how your business is set up) reach our server. We use them only to work out your dates and don't store them; we count only how many calendars are made each day.
  • For a library search, only the words your assistant searches for reach our server; for a list, the kind of entry and which page; and for a read, the id of the entry it reads. We use them only to find the entries and don't store them; we count only how many searches (a list counts as one) and reads are made each day.
  • The links back to this website carry your answers, your recipe or your figures after the “#” in the address, a part your browser doesn't send to us. The page removes them from the address bar when it opens.
  • Your conversation is handled by the company that provides your assistant (for example Anthropic, for Claude), under its own privacy policy. We receive only the answers and country it sends to our free check, the recipe and prices it sends to our recipe tool, the figures and answers it sends to a calculator, the website address it sends to the website check, the state and answers it sends to the deadline calendar, or the words, kind or id it sends to our library, plus the usual technical details of the request (such as the IP address it came from), which our hosting provider keeps briefly in its logs.

Our Privacy Policy has the details.

Buying through your agent

The tools above never take payment, send email or create a report. A second server, at https://restaurantdoctorai.com/api/mcp/agent, lets an agent buy for you:

  • restaurantdoctor_buy_report prepares the full report from your 12 answers, your restaurant's name and your email, and returns a payment link. Your agent can ask for the report with your real numbers and a check-up instead (we email you the report page's link, and you add last month's numbers there within 24 hours), and can add the Restaurant Fix Kit: food cost, labor, delivery and waste workbooks for Excel, with printable PDFs.
  • restaurantdoctor_buy_online_check finds your restaurant on Google Maps and returns a payment link for its full online check.
  • restaurantdoctor_buy_report_codes returns a payment link for a pack of 10 prepaid report codes, for advisors who run the check for the restaurants they advise. Once it's paid, the codes go back to the agent and are emailed to the address it gives. A pack of 50 is bought on our advisors page.
  • restaurantdoctor_use_code spends a prepaid report code on one restaurant's report.

Nothing is charged until a link is paid: by an agent that pays with Stripe's machine payments, from a wallet you set up and within the limits you set, or by you, when you open the link in a browser and pay on this website's checkout. Your agent should ask you first. Our pricing page lists what each costs, and our Terms say who sells what.
