WhatsApp MCP server for Claude, ChatGPT and your AI agents

A hosted WhatsApp MCP server: setup for each AI app, the tool list, personal number vs Business API, and how it compares with self-hosted servers.

What is it?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the standard way AI apps connect to other tools. WhatSync is a hosted WhatsApp MCP server at https://whatsync.app/api/mcp. It uses OAuth, so you sign in instead of pasting API keys. Nothing to install.

Add it to your AI app

  • Claude: add https://whatsync.app/api/mcp as a custom connector. Claude guide
  • ChatGPT: add WhatSync from the ChatGPT app store. ChatGPT guide
  • Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport http whatsync https://whatsync.app/api/mcp, then run /mcp to sign in.
  • Cursor: add {"mcpServers": {"whatsync": {"url": "https://whatsync.app/api/mcp"}}} to ~/.cursor/mcp.json.
  • Codex: codex mcp add whatsync --url https://whatsync.app/api/mcp, then codex mcp login whatsync.
  • Any other client that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth: use the same URL.

The AI app only sees the tools the user allowed when signing in. Sends are real WhatsApp messages; AI apps ask the user to confirm them.

Personal number or Business API

  • Personal WhatsApp, linked through WhatsApp's Linked devices: chats, groups, files, polls and reactions. Not for messaging many people at once; bulk or unsolicited messages from a personal number go against WhatsApp's rules.
  • WhatsApp Business API through Meta: templates and campaigns. Meta reviews templates and charges per message, by country.

Files and voice notes

The AI can find photos, videos, voice notes and documents by file name or caption and get a download link. It does not transcribe voice notes or read text inside images.

Hosted vs self-hosted

Open source WhatsApp MCP servers on GitHub run on your own computer, keep chats there, and are free, but need a local install and only work while your computer is on, usually for personal numbers only. WhatSync runs for you, works in web and phone AI apps, and supports the Business API.
